Numa Giri (a Touhou LW original) refers to mist that forms above marshland. It is the temperament of Komachi, who has long overseen the passage of souls between worlds as a member of the Spirit River Railroad. Komachi's temperament has undergone soul modulation at the fundamental level. Souls are hard to control, but the employees charged with their management at the Spirit River Railroad do not allow change (Moon Essence) or selfishness (Star Essence).
The ability of Komachi Onozuka from the Spirit River Railroad (a Touhou LW original). It is essentially unchanged from our version of Komachi's ability. However, since there are many mysteries surrounding the railroad and those associated with it, it's predicted that some things about this Komachi's ability are fundamentally different, just as they are for Eiki's. Originally, her ability to manipulate distance was used to cross the Sanzu River, but it seemingly comes in handy in this world too, where she works as a train driver. No one alive knows of the worlds after death. Perhaps those with memories of their previous lives do, but supposedly even the Children of Miare don't recall everything from their previous lives, despite their perfect memory. However, it's known that after you die, the first person you meet is a shinigami. Or, as a famous rakugo puts it, a shinigami is the last person you meet before you die. Even in this world, Komachi Onozuka insists she's not a stereotypical shinigami that reaps life from people... Although, she may say something entirely different depending on who she's talking to. Whatever the case, it would seem the person you meet after death is undoubtedly a shinigami like Komachi. Since this world's Komachi works for the railroad, perhaps when you first awake after death, you find yourself aboard a train. Gently swaying on the subway with no way to tell where you are is strikingly similar to crossing the Sanzu River. There are countless tales from around the world of underground tunnels that lead to other worlds... worlds beyond death. Those tunnels exist amidst layers containing the history and memories of the Earth, and passing through them reactivates those memories via a mechanism similar to electromagnetic induction. The memories may show the past, a future based on that past, or a present that could never exist. They may show what's occurring in far-off lands or in distant galaxies. Or maybe, just maybe, they show visions of those you long to meet but no longer can. Traveling between worlds is built on the impossible, but for those who hold a desire to return home, it is not always a good thing. Keeping alive those who shouldn't yet die is another task of the shinigami. Perhaps one day you'll wake to find yourself on a strange train with phosphorous sparks streaming by the window like so many stars. If you do, you'd be wise to explain your situation to the friendly, laidback train staff. "Big Puncher" is the name of Komachi's prized scythe now that it's been spiritually modified into a ticket punch. The Japanese kanji for sin is carved into the base, and when she strikes the ticket punch down, blades pop out, leaving the kanji imprinted on passengers' tickets. Being able to clearly identify sinners makes Eiki and Kutaka's jobs far easier. Which is the same reason Komachi often makes small talk with the souls aboard the train. After all, talking is the best way to get to know someone, human or otherwise.
The Spread Shot of Komachi Onozuka from the Spirit River Railroad (a Touhou LW original). She hurls money phantoms at her enemies. Actually, it might be phantom money she hurls. Speaking of which, invisible money is pretty common in the outside world. Value was never visible, but physical money was used to represent it. Of course, money never represented an object's true value, but now even it has gone and turned invisible! Perhaps the economic system itself will turn into a sort of fiction.
The Focus Shot of Komachi Onozuka from the Spirit River Railroad (a Touhou LW original). She strikes her enemies with an oversized ticket punch. This ticket punch uses the shinigami's trademark scythe as its spiritual base. As such, Komachi often uses it to entertain the phantom passengers, but it also works as a ticket punch. Getting your ticket punched on a train was kind of exciting, wasn't it?
A Spell Card of Komachi Onozuka from the Spirit River Railroad (a Touhou LW original). She summons earthbound spirits in this attack. Earthbound spirits never leave the area they are bound to, but why? Perhaps they simply can't leave. If earthbound spirits are anything like 3D projections, then it must be the ground that's projecting them. In other words, the data embedded in the ground is activated by some power, causing an earthbound spirit to appear. That implies spirits who move are capable of doing so because they can carry the object to which their data is bound. So it's possible some spirits don't move because they're too weak to carry their object.
A Spell Card of Komachi Onozuka from the Spirit River Railroad (a Touhou LW original). She lets souls play in this attack. It seems souls and other spiritual beings have their own thoughts and feelings, so it wouldn't be strange for them to form their own societies or have their own customs. However, with the exception of those like Yuyuko Saigyouji and Youmu Konpaku, almost none of them exhibit such behaviors. Perhaps it's more difficult than you might think to retain your "human-ness" after death.
The Last Word of Komachi Onozuka from the Spirit River Railroad (a Touhou LW original). She sends souls on their way as the first train of the day crashes through her enemies. The souls of the dead require guidance. If they didn't receive any, the world of the living would be overrun before long. Nothing can exist in worlds devoid of death and life. This is because the living are needed to constantly perceive the things around them. The first living being was also the first to experience death and to travel beyond it. Quantum tunneling between life and death always seems to begin with a coincidence, but it's a long and winding road that Komachi Onozuka has grown accustomed to seeing.
Sometimes it's better to use an approximation than to obsess over finding the exact answer.
This isn't being lazy, it's just being efficient.
When in doubt, turn to the wisdom of your ancestors. You might need to put your own spin on that wisdom though.
