Character Information

Temperament: Umi-giri

Umi-giri (a Touhou LW original) refers to fog that forms out at sea. This is an apt temperament for Komachi, the shinigami from the world of eternal summer. Her windsurfing lessons cost the same as passage across the Sanzu River. (Strong against Metal Phase.) "Feel the wind in your sails!" (Strong against Wood Phase.) "Follow me, phantoms!" (Strong against Water Phase.) "I hope I don't get a lecturing for this." (Weak to Fire Phase.)

Ability/Backstory: Capable of manipulating distance (Beach)

The ability of Komachi Onozuka from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). This ability doesn't seem any different from the Komachi of our world's ability. Toyoko no Kuni is the world beyond death and lies either in the far East or the far South, although it's not clear which. In ancient Ryukyuan, the indigenous language of the Ryukyu Islands, the word for "north" was pronounced "nishi," which is the same as the pronunciation for "west" in Japanese. That might have led to some confusion regarding all of the cardinal directions. The pronunciation for "east" was "agaruhe," which is similar to "go up" in Japanese. Even in the world of eternal summer, Komachi's job as the Sanzu River ferrywoman was no different. She calmed the souls of the deceased and ferried them across to Higan and the Hell courtroom that awaited them. However, reaching the shores of Higan isn't easy on account of the Sanzu River's strong current and rough waves. Luckily for Komachi, her ability to manipulate distance makes crossing the river no more difficult than cruising between the summer islands. That said, the phantoms get annoyed when Komachi doesn't get a little air while going over the waves. Some of the phantoms are there on vacation, so it's important to show them a good time. If you think about it, it'd be stranger if Komachi DIDN'T windsurf. "If that hermit didn't spend so long playing detective, I'd have had a much more relaxing vacation." "Really? It seemed like you were enjoying it well enough." "Well, I wasn't... Huh?" "You were sleeping rather peacefully if you ask me." "Eep! Lady Eiki, what're you doing here?!" "Kutaka's here, too. We're taking an official vacation day." "Th-That's great, but... what else do you know about my time off?" "I know about the hermit playing detective, and how you conducted yourself. In short, I know everything." "Yikes... Although, I guess that's good news in a way." "Don't forget, a Yama's Hell ears hear all."

Attacks

Higan Jump

The Spread Shot of Komachi Onozuka from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She turns her ferry into a surfboard and carves a path through the waves. There's a popular nursery rhyme about rowing a boat used to get children to fall asleep. One of Komachi's strategies for doing less work is to doze off while on the job, but that's impossible to do while windsurfing... or so everyone thought!

Death Sail

The Focus Shot of Komachi Onozuka from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She turns her shinigami scythe into a sail and lets the wind propel her forward. Shinigami are either responsible for assisting the Yama, collecting the deceased, or ferrying souls across the Sanzu River. As a shinigami ferrywoman, Komachi's scythe is simply for show, but by transforming it into a sail, she looks cooler than ever. Radical, even!

Water Hell: Channel of Avici

A Spell Card of Komachi Onozuka from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She turns her ferry into a surfboard and carves a path through the waves. Even with the Sanzu River below the sea, crossing it isn't much different. In fact, it might be easier now. Come to think of it, the Sanzu River contains a huge volume of water, but does it all count as seawater now?

Soul Sign: Scythe of Roaming Travelers

A Spell Card of Komachi Onozuka from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She turns her shinigami scythe into a sail and lets the wind propel her forward. Komachi is a shinigami ferrywoman, and so doesn't get involved in the sorting of dead souls. Although... there's no confirmation of that. Komachi loves to chat, but she has her secrets. Perhaps it wouldn't be wise to trust everything she says. Maybe she's more than just a ferrywoman.

Interworld Hollow Boat

The Last Word of Komachi Onozuka from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She crosses the sea in a mysterious boat. Conversations with the dead are an important part of human history. By paying respect to those who have passed and inheriting their belongings, civilization greatly advanced. On the other hand, the circulation of souls is a battle against limited resources. Souls are reborn through the reincarnation cycle and must once again join the world of the living... which is why the ferrywoman slacking off is such a big problem. It's believed by many that the world beyond death sits right above the clouds. Since the sea and the sky are in direct contact, it's often thought that flying through the sky is the same as sailing across the sea. That way of thinking can be seen in the fact that Sukunabikona sailed to Japan from his homeland, Tokoyo no Kuni, and in how the wealthy foreign individuals who arrived in Japan were said to have descended from the sky to the mountains. Perhaps the Moon's reflection in the water is the real Moon and maybe Takamagahara, the abode of the heavenly gods, was simply the eastern land from the age of the gods. When a giant ship from from the West landed on the shores of Japan, the indigenous people couldn't comprehend what they were seeing. It seems they assumed the woman on board was a god who had descended from the heavens above. ...When Komachi first heard that tale, she couldn't help but think it was a load of nonsense.
