Character Information

Temperament: Shinkirou

Shinkirou (A Touhou LW original) refers to a mirage, which is an optical phenomenon where light rays refract and create an image in the distance. This is an apt temperament for Kokoro, who creates fantastical stories that stimulate the imagination of her audience through Noh. Kokoro is endowed with Earth Phase for her difficulty in changing herself and Star Essence for her boundless sensitivity. The encompassing and regenerative Earth Phase resists Fire Phase, because fire produces earth, but it is weak to Wood Phase, because wood parts earth. The diverse and uncooperative Star Essence resists the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence, but it is weak to the charming and arrogant Sun Essence.

Ability/Backstory: Capable of manipulating emotions

Kokoro's ability to control the emotions of others. This ability apparently has a deep connection to the masks that she owns. The many masks that she has each govern a different emotion. Each Noh mask acts as a substitute for her deadpan expression, allowing her to express a variety of emotions. When the Mask of Hope was lost, the people of Gensokyo lost the ability to feel a sense of hope, leaving everyone seeking out a source of pleasure to fill that need. The prevailing theory is that Kokoro ran wild after losing the mask, which had an effect on those around her. Kokoro had no ill will toward anyone during the chaos. She was merely rushing to try and resolve the incident herself. Therefore, it is safe to say that she had no evil intentions when she was in control of the emotions of others... probably.

Attacks

Shouting Giant Spider Mask

Hata no Kokoro's Spread Shot. She puts on the Shikami Mask and spews spider webs. The spewing of webs is much like a scene from the Noh performance called Tsuchigumo. Could this have something to do with Yamame?

  • Stripe-Patterned Thread
  • Tsuchigumo's Spirit
  • Kishin of Mount Katsuragi

Roaring Youkai Fox Mask

Hata no Kokoro's Focus Shot. She dons the Fox Mask and bites the enemy. The Fox Mask was used for kyogen (performance of sorts between acts of a Noh play) or kagura (ancient Shinto music and dancing) and not the performance itself. Kyogen and kagura have the same origin as Noh.

  • Spirit Fox Mask
  • Soaring Fox Mask
  • Heaven Fox Mask
Angry Mask: Mask of an Angry Hated Wolf

Hata no Kokoro's Spell Card. She takes on the form of an angry wolf and bites the target. Wolves have been revered as divinity since ancient times. There is a story of a person who acted as an intermediary between two clashing wolves and was rewarded a position at the Emperor's side. Whether this has anything to do with Kokoro is unclear.

Melancholy Mask: The Man of Qi Worries about the Earth

Hata no Kokoro's Spell Card. This attack has Kokoro strike with all the force of a cataclysm. There is a Chinese story where a person from the land of Qi suffered depression from fear of a cataclysm that will never come. This story is now used to refer to people whose fears are groundless.

Dance of the Empty-Hearted Masks - Noh of Darkness

Hata no Kokoro's Last Word. An attack that has Kokoro donning a number of masks and performing Noh in total darkness. Kokoro is a menreiki, a tsukumogami of the masks that Hata no Kawakatsu was gifted by Prince Shoutoku. Hata no Kawakatsu is said to have created Noh using the masks, however the details remain a mystery. It is possible that this Last Word is called Noh of Darkness because its origins are not recorded in history.
