Symbol of Loneliness and Demise
Shizuha Aki's usual outfit. It features a slim-fit red shirt and a skirt with an autumn foliage design.
Melancholy Autumn-Leaf Artist in Winter
Shizuha's fancy winter outfit. Did you know she's actually a highly talented artist?
Akisame (a Touhou LW original) refers to the long-lasting rains in autumn. This is appropiriate for Shizuha as the long quiet showers make the leaves fall. Shizuha is endowed with Metal Phase, the element of autumn, and Moon Essence, which brings about periodic change.
Shizuha is the god who controls the turning of leaves. She is in charge of all the trees from the top of the Youkai Mountain to the garden trees in the Human Village. However, it is well known that the leaves don't all turn at once, but start turning from the trees at high altitude to low. This probably means that Shizuha starts at the top of the Youkai Mountain and works her way down to the Human Village, then goes back up. (Minoriko probably does something similar.) The leaves start to fall after they've finished turning, which lowers the spirits of the villagers as they will have to clean the fallen leaves up. This may be what's stopping Shizuha from gaining more followers.
Shizuha Aki's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). This attack causes leaves to fall and then explode. In Japanese culture, the act of cleaning up fallen leaves by gathering them together and burning them is considered elegant. However, it is not done very often nowadays.
Shizuha Aki's Focus Shot (a Touhou LW original). Falling leaves on the wind are blown forcibly into the targets. In the past, the autumn foliage in the mountains was apparently not as easily accessible as the cherry blossoms in spring. This is probably because autumn is the season when the weather starts to get cold, which makes hiking in the mountains far more dangerous.
Shizuha Aki's Spell Card. A forest of falling leaves dance on the wind. The large variety in autumn leaf colors is apparently due to the inconsistency of the paint that Shizuha uses. However, the god of the mountain shrine claims that it's because of the difference in the types of leaves and the chlorophyll in them.
Shizuha Aki's Spell Card. This attack blasts out gusts of wind full of fallen leaves. Another name for autumn is fall, which is said to have come from the falling of leaves. The word autumn comes from a Latin term that refers to the passing of the year.
Shizuha Aki's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). This attack involves charging forward toward the targets while riding a turbulent wave of fallen leaves in a banana-shaped boat. Some cultures have myths based on the banana which explain the origin of mortality. These myths involve comparing the perishability of the banana with the everlasting nature of something else. Some myths substitute these items with an older sister and a younger sister.
The change of a single leaf indicates the coming of autumn. The small details always show signs of what is to come.
The wind in autumn is said to be colorless. This is because in the Five Phases, autumn's phase is metal, which has the corresponding color of white.
Poets of all nations throughout history have written poems about autumn. The allure of autumn captures the hearts of many.
