Character Information

Temperament: Foehn Wind

Foehn Wind (a Touhou LW original) refers to a phenomenon where moist air blows over a mountain and then descends as a warm, downslope wind. This is an apt temperament for this Suwako, who has embarked on a long journey to end the Lost Word Incident. Suwako's temperament has been fully reconstructed. As a god who shapes the land, she has control over Earth Phase; as a frog god, she has control over Moon Essence; and as a water god, she has control over Water Phase. She is weak against snake gods (Fire Phase) and wisteria branches (Wood Phase).

Ability/Backstory: Capable of creating earthiness (Lost)

The ability of Suwako Moriya, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). Suwako completely lost this ability due to a Lost Word. She is currently regaining it little by little, though not through restoring or replicating her old ability, but with a newly constructed original ability that formed a core to build upon. She has continued to travel across worlds to try and end the Lost Word Incident. This Suwako once lost everything to a Lost Word, which makes her one of the Restored. Suwako is an ancient god, who could almost be described as a being of pure power. From the very beginning, she had already lost a part of herself, which made her emotionally resilient. The Lost Word Incident isn't the first time she's come face to face with the threat of being erased. She experienced the same threat when Kanako first attacked, and just before she came to Gensokyo. That's why she can be found lounging around and relaxing, rarely bothering to stand up. The Japanese word for sit is "suwaru," so by sitting, she's embodying the Suwa region. Weaponized Hall of Worship (Back Half of Moriya Shrine): Multiple divine spirits have come together and transformed into this hall of worship to assist Suwako. Unlike Kanako's hall of worship, Suwako's is mainly comprised of nameless and unusual gods, making it even more mysterious. Many of those gods are known as Mishaguji, and are imagined as divine spirits who embody amorphous power, dwell in rocks, mountains, and trees, and take the form of snakes. However, other powerful forces have also been detected within the hall, including the presence of Matarajin. As shown by the construction and usage of the Weaponized Hall of Worship, Matarajin is a sitting god (from "Suwa" and the Japanese word for sit) and a reverse-side or background god. Bhaisajyaguru the Medicine Buddha, who is conflated with Moriya Daimyoujin, and Lord Daikoku, the syncretic origin of Matarajin, are both specialists in medicine. Gods were also connected to each other via people arriving to Japan from across the sea, immigration, the Silk Road, and so on, but few instances of this can be found in historical records. They are unseen ruins that can only be glimpsed via genetic analysis of humans and the comparison of cultures. In that sense, science has prevailed.

Attacks

Mishaguji Machine Gun

The Spread Shot of Suwako Moriya, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She gathers the power of divine retribution as bullets. The history of Moriya Shrine's faith is extensive, and detailing its timeline is no easy task. However, looking at the Divine War's Native Myth, you can see that Suwa was always a region that valued technology. Across all ages, the side with the more advanced technology prevails in battle.

Mishaguji Piercer

The Focus Shot of Suwako Moriya, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She gathers the power of divine retribution as armor-piercing shells. It's said that the Divine War was really a conflict between old and new methods of iron smithing. The old method, which used bog iron deposits and low-temperature furnaces, simply couldn't compete with the new method, which used iron sand from mines. Wisteria vines represent bamboo sieves used to extract iron sand, and iron rings represent ancient iron smithing.

Moriya Shrine: Beloved Living God Daughter

A Spell Card of Suwako Moriya, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She recalls her memories with Sanae. A people's descendants can be thought of as the heart of their respective era's civilization. No matter how advanced a civilization may be, it's meaningless without a new generation to inherit it. In a world where all civilizations exist under constant threat of annihilation, children are invaluable. After all, no one can live forever.

Moriya Shrine: My Central God

A Spell Card of Suwako Moriya, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She recalls her memories with Kanako. By comparing ancient Japanese mythological records with the Native Myth, the difference in ways of thinking between those who lived in the central region and those who lived in the surrounding provinces becomes apparent. Kanako attaining power over Suwa is a prime example of how the relationship between the central government and the noble provincial families changed over time. In a way, it's as if Kanako was a strong career woman who came from the head office to be the rural branch's new boss. (Although looking at the myth, perhaps it's more accurate to say she was sent there after a demotion.)

Ancient Suwa War

The Last Word of Suwako Moriya, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She recalls the beginnings of the Suwa region. The region was either established by Takeminakata no Kami or Suwa Daijin. Or by neither of them. Or by both of them. That's because, while Kanako had won the right to rule over Suwa, Suwako's help was necessary to gather faith. Kanako decided not to take faith by force, and Suwako decided not to cling to it out of pride. Instead, the two opted to work together. The god from the central region remained in Suwa, and the Native God began to accept and grow accustomed to her presence. The lines between myth and government rule blurred, and Suwa maintained its freedom to the point it could exist somewhat independently. A free mindset provides hope for the future, and Sanae Kochiya embodies that mindset.

Skills

Skill: Moriya Daimyoujin

After the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, the Moriya god was conflated with Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha. That's why there's a hall with a statue of him within the shrine grounds.

Skill: Suwa Daijin

Even in the far-off land of Tianzhu, they were called a traitor. That's said to be the reason they're seen as a villain.

Skill: Wild Frog God

She laid waste to the land, sat, and was sat upon. The Japanese word for sit is "suwaru," which is why the region was known as Suwa.
