Kouten (a Touhou LW original) refers to rough weather that threatens to disrupt daily life and is often used in reference to strong wind and rain. This is an apt temperament for this Aya since she is the host of the shikigami known as Zenki, who is both an oni and a tengu. Aya's temperament (Moon Essence and Wood Phase) has combined with Zenki's temperament (Fire Phase and Metal Phase).
The ability of Aya Shameimaru from the world reborn (a Touhou LW original). This Aya's ability remains essentially unchanged, but when she's activated as a shikigami, Zenki's power envelops almost her entire body, which seemingly causes her to act like a completely different person. Yukari Yakumo is recruiting shikigami monitors. She claims it's just for an experiment, just to gather some information, but that's simply an excuse. The truth is that she used information gathered from other worlds to develop special shikigami magic capable of controlling shikigami, and now she wants to try it out. It seems she does also have some desire to accelerate the other world investigations, though... To investigate the depths of the ocean, you need a submarine. And the deeper you want to go, the more sophisticated equipment you need. To climb higher mountains, you need better training and more precise planning. To voyage into the reaches of space, technological progress is a must. The aforementioned special shikigami magic was created with such thoughts in mind. Yukari Yakumo turned the crow tengu, Aya Shameimaru, into a shikigami. Yukari distinctly remembered discussing the topic with Aya, but it seemed Aya had completely forgotten. "Oh, yeah. Now I remember that time you abused animals," she thought to herself as Yukari thrust a document in her face with a cocky grin. The document stated Yukari had permission to turn Aya into a shikigami and was signed by the Tenma and the Great Tengu. "But someone like you could easily forge something like this," exclaimed Aya. But despite her skepticism, she was curious about what it'd be like to explore other worlds as a shikigami. She even figured that should things go awry, she could always expose the truth in an article about the "youkai fraudster." Only beast youkai can become shikigami, and being around half beast, Aya Shameimaru qualified. She became host to a Ran Yakumo-type shikigami program called Zenki. Aya believed this Zenki must be the name of Yukari Yakumo's crow shikigami, but she was later told that it's more complicated than that… But there was something more fundamental Aya had overlooked. Apparently, when a shikigami is fully activated, the program takes control of the host's body and mind. Physical strength is enhanced, but memories become hazy, making article writing practically impossible. The memories of shikigami are stored in their tails, so by collecting them, Yukari Yakumo can gather information while removing the shikigami program. It also allows her the opportunity to erase "inconvenient" memories. Youkai who've become a shikigami must follow the terms of their contract with Yukari. Should they do so, they are granted extreme, phantasm-class power said to rival that of Yukari's. However, if they disobey the terms, they become unable to use the shikigami program's power and revert back to their normal power level.
The Spread Shot of Aya Shameimaru from the world reborn (a Touhou LW original). She creates a ferocious gust of wind with her axe in an attack that strongly resembles the move "Gust Fan." It's as if this destructive move combines the agility of a tengu and the unnatural strength of an oni.
The Focus Shot of Aya Shameimaru from the world reborn (a Touhou LW original). She sprints with the wind at her back, crashing into her foe in an attack that strongly resembles the move "Dashing Domination." This move utilizes a tengu's ability to move at high speeds, allowing Aya to charge forward while releasing shikigami ofuda.
A Spell Card of Aya Shameimaru from the world reborn (a Touhou LW original). She swings a large axe, sending a devastating whirlwind toward her foes. The red oni known as Zenki is said to have guarded their master's front or right side with a large axe, which they also used to forge a path forward by chopping down trees.
A Spell Card of Aya Shameimaru from the world reborn (a Touhou LW original). She sends her familiars to bind her foes and raise them off the ground. It's said that a practitioner of Shugendou bound the two oni Zenki and Goki by using Acala's curse when they attacked. The pair begged for forgiveness and served that practitioner from then on.
The Last Word of Aya Shameimaru from the world reborn (a Touhou LW original). She replicates the legendary red oni shikigami's power. The red oni, Zenki, later became a tengu, calling themselves Zenkibou Nachitakemoto. Yukari Yakumo installed a shikigami into Aya Shameimaru, but whether this shikigami and Zenkibou are the same being is unclear. That said, Aya does feel some kind of oni power inside her. The Youkai Mountain was formerly ruled by oni, meaning the tengu had to answer to them. Aya is once again under the control of an oni but is unsure whether to submit or use her reporter skills to resist. For now, she's decided to go with the flow because, when she thought about it, she realized that's exactly how she survived during the oni's reign and in the time since they vanished.
There are many legends about where oni came from. It's possible that they used to be regular humans.
Red represents Yang and an open-mouthed pose. You'd figure an oni would be linked to Yin energy, though.
Zenki became the founder of Shugendou's shikigami.
