Goeika is the art of reciting sutras in the style of music popular during a given age. It can even be performed as a band... Byakuren has a solid musical background, but even though she can play the shamisen, that doesn't mean she can play the guitar. It seems like she'll need a fair bit of practice before mastering her chosen instrument, and considering the fact she also has to teach Joon to play, it'll be a while yet before they're performing on stage. They really are starting from the bottom, but they both have big ambitions.
"I want to share my message with the people!"
"With this instrument, I'm gonna be rich!"
And with that, their band practice... or rather, band training began!
"I'm rooting for you, Joon."
Having heard that Joon was giving it her all practicing guitar, Shion decided to lend her one of her ribbons.
"This is all I have to give you right now... I'm not even sure it'll suit you."
Joon took the ribbon and silently put it on. Afterward, she went straight back to training, and her days of hardship continued. Blisters began forming on her fingers, and her throat got so dry she could hardly swallow. But no matter how tough things got, she never gave up. With every strum of her guitar, Shion's ribbon wobbled slightly.
"I can't believe she thought this ribbon wouldn't help..." thought Joon as the melody she was strumming began building in intensity.
The guitar strings vibrated, forming a melody and firing up the crowd. Thanks to their experience reciting sutras, Byakuren and Joon were used to keeping tempo, and playing smoothly together came as a result of their training.
However, during a live performance like this, that wasn't enough. They had to be fully in sync with each other. When one sped up, the other sped up. When one slowed down, the other slowed down. And when one lost themselves in the melody, the other lost themselves all the same.
(Joon, what message do you want to deliver to this crowd?)
(Byakuren, what are you doing this for?)
They'd lost count of how many times they'd performed together like this, but as they began playing back-to-back, propping each other up, their thoughts and feelings aligned.
Temple of Rock
Byakuren and Joon were playing at the small live music club, where a wide variety of indie artists were known to perform. This was the first venue they ever performed at, and at that moment, they were shredding their guitars and singing their lungs out. As thoughts of reaching people with their music filled their heads, a spotlight above them switched on.
They were exhausted, but with beads of sweat twinkling like stars in the spotlight, they bent down, getting ready to leap into the air. This was the big moment.
"Let's do this, Joon!"
"Ready when you are, Byakuren!"
There was a brief moment of silence... then the duo began to sing.
BOUZU The Rock!
"Don't worry, it's alright
Let's live and have fun
Then, die peacefully with no regrets
All that abandons us, all that brings us pain
All that brings us suffering, all that gets in our way
In due time, will crumble and fade
Ain't no need to bow down to other's feelings
Or give it your all to please 'em
It sounds dumb, we know
But ignore them all, who needs 'em?
So believe us, it's alright
Thanks for listening to this song
Maybe it's too much to say it twice
But thanks for listening all night long!"
As the final note faded, the crowd erupted with cheering and applause. No doubt each of them would be thinking back on Byakuren and Joon's incredible voices while humming the melody for days to come.
