Okina Matara is an unusual secret god who possesses various divine aspects. She is also one of the sages who created Gensokyo.
Mai Teireida is one of the secret god's two servants. She carries around a broad-leaf bamboo stalk and has an easygoing and positive personality.
Satono Nishida is the secret god's other servant. She carries around a myoga ginger stalk and has a gentle and carefree personality.
They all live in the Land of the Back Door. All of Gensokyo can be observed from this place through the infinite doors that float here. Only Okina and her two servants live here now, but there was a time when zashiki-warashi gathered here to work remotely. The Land of the Back Door also served as the stage for a battle of bullets between Okina and the fairies.
Gods are spirits, beings, and forces worshipped by humans. The gods are shaped by humans, just as humans are shaped by them, as the gods also desire to be worshipped. The unique culture surrounding gods and their worship in Japan has made the country what it is today.
The gods' powers and personalities are as varied as the stars in the sky. However, the secret gods stick out as being particularly unusual since gods must stand in the limelight to gather faith, and secret gods are named as such because they remain hidden. Okina Matara seems to accomplish this by periodically switching between flaunting her power out in the open and scheming behind closed doors.
Sages are wise people, and in Gensokyo, this term is used as a title for those who had a hand in Gensokyo's creation. There are also beings called sages on the far side of the moon. Sages are people of few words. In fact, you should be wary of a sage who speaks at length. The words of the wise have the power to incite action in whoever listens to them. And the wiser someone is, the more influential their words are.
"Listen well, you two. There are two doors here."
"What are you talking about, Master?"
"Yeah, we'll stay with you to the very end."
