Shion Yorigami is a disastrously poor poverty god in dire straits. To adequately explain the concept of luck would require countless hours of time and effort, but put simply, luck is a formless influence on the universe that's as inescapable as a shadow. However, Shion unintentionally shines a light on this shadow, erasing its influence with her ability to make people unlucky, including herself. As a result, it seems she lives a life devoid of good fortune and happy coincidences.
Tenshi Hinanawi is a celestial who enjoys living in luxury. Ever since she lived on Earth as the lowly daughter of a priest's servant, she's always been extremely fortunate. Those in Heaven deemed her an ally and let her ascend to Heaven to become a celestial. Tenshi could be adequately described as being "incredibly lucky," and her levels of luck rival those of even the Hakurei shrine maiden.
"Urgh... This is my last ticket."
At the ongoing Hakurei Shrine festival they were holding a raffle event, which is where the poverty god could be found, her shoulders hunched forward, slumping under the weight of countless disappointments. Many people weren't interested in testing their luck and had discarded their tickets, which Shion went around quietly collecting. The wooden raffle box was overflowing with raffle cards, and each ticket she collected granted her one attempt to pull a "Winner" card. But so far, no luck... She was being battered by a storm-force gale that howled, "Loser, Loser, Loser."
"Maybe I never stood a chance..." she lamented as she went to hand over her last ticket. But then, she heard a cheerful voice call out to her.
"You're looking as gloomy as ever, I see. I sure hope it's not contagious!"
"I see. So you were trying your luck in this raffle event," said Tenshi.
"Yep. But look, I'm nothing but a loser," replied Shion, her head drooping downward.
Tenshi followed her eyeline to see dozens of "Loser" cards littered around Shion's feet.
"In that case, why don't you let me play for you?"
"B-But, if I'm anywhere near you, all your luck will disappear."
"Don't be silly. I'm a celestial, remember? Your misfortune won't affect me in the slightest!"
"I suppose. But..."
"C'mon, just gimme the ticket already!"
Tenshi couldn't stand to listen to any more of Shion's excuses, so she grabbed the ticket from her, which she promptly gave to the raffle supervisor and thrust her hand into the raffle box.
"Poverty's made you weak, but fortune favors the strong. Right here, right now, I'll show you how strong I am!"
"Congratulations! You're a winner!"
Tenshi held up the raffle card she'd pulled triumphantly, which had "Winner" written on it in big red letters.
"I told ya. There's no way I was gonna lose."
"That was amazing! You really are a celestial!"
As if to cut the pair's conversation short, the raffle supervisor began handing prizes over to Tenshi. But it seems she wasn't the least bit interested in prizes.
"Give 'em to this girl here," Tenshi said, gesturing toward Shion. With a nod, the supervisor did as requested.
"Yay! Thanks, Miss Tenshi!" exclaimed Shion, her arms full of prizes and a look of pure joy on her face. Then, Tenshi decided it was time to demonstrate the full extent of her lucky nature, and it wasn't long before "Winner" cards were fluttering all around like a flurry of fortunate snow.
