Spring in the Underworld

Story
Rin Kaenbyou is a type of youkai known as a kasha. It's said that elderly cats transform into kasha when they eat phantoms and corpses. As a kasha, it's Rin's job to gather corpses using her wheelbarrow, which is exactly what she's doing today. Rin doesn't like her full name on account of it being too long, so she gets people to simply call her Orin. Perhaps her desire to have a nickname stems from her time as a cat. However, while those days are long gone, she's still being kept as a pet at the Palace of the Earth Spirits.

Lily White is a fairy who announces the coming of spring. When spring finally arrives, Lily can be seen excitedly flying all around Gensokyo letting everyone know. Today, she's appeared in the Underworld hoping to learn more about Hell's cherry blossoms. With cherry crystals falling all around her, it wasn't long until she bumped into the kasha, Orin, who was busy transporting corpses.

"Hello! I'm Lily White, the Fairy Herald of Spring!" "H-Hello..." Orin was somewhat confused by the sudden appearance of a fairy. Around them, pink crystals drifted to the ground. They were called cherry crystals, and this was just one of the many strange phenomena that can be seen in the Underworld. "So pretty...! Hey, it's spring here, right? I mean, these things floating around us are called cherry crystals, after all." "I-I dunno... When you put it that way, I suppose it could be spring." Orin didn't quite know how to answer. It seems she wasn't expecting to be asked about the coming of spring by the literal Fairy Herald of Spring.

Orin didn't know whether cherry crystals were a sign of spring, but she did know something else about them. "Cherry crystals contain souls. When corpses are buried up above, their souls seep down through the earth and become crystals or something. Vengeful spirits love eating these things." As she was speaking, a handful of vengeful spirits intently munching on cherry crystals began to gather around Orin, perhaps drawn in by her wheelbarrow. "Cherry crystals have a lot to do with fairies and lifeforce. In a way, they should be the type of cherry blossom you fairies have the strongest connection to..." Orin leaned in closer to the smiling Fairy Herald of Spring and whispered, "If you don't wanna be these vengeful spirits' next snack, I suggest you don't get too close."

"I see! So they're eating cherry blossoms while viewing cherry blossoms... It's kinda like eating cherry blossom mochi," replied Lily, to which Orin let out a meow of confusion. Thinking that Orin hadn't understood her, Lily took out some cherry blossom mochi and a red bean paste bun from her pocket. "Cherry blossom mochi are wrapped in cherry leaves, and there's salted cherry blossoms inside red bean paste buns. Spring makes for a delicious snack!" "Were you not listening to me just now...?" replied Orin, a single eyebrow raised in disbelief. However, it wasn't long till the two of them were enjoying the cherry crystal view together while eating Lily's snacks.
