Many residents of Gensokyo enjoy playing music, so it seems fair to assume there are idol groups too.
Yamame Kurodani is an upbeat tsuchigumo who's full of life. Apparently, she can perform all kinds of acrobatics using her spider silk.
Eika Ebisu is a stillborn spirit with an adorable smile. Her lovable mannerisms and charming conversation skills make her the perfect idol. It's no wonder she's known as the stillborn idol.
Mayumi Joutouguu is a haniwa with a great singing voice and an impeccable sense of style. She takes pride in her outfit, which is supposedly ceramic.
The term "underground idols" refers to independent idol groups. Perhaps the main distinction between them and normal idols is that they make far fewer media appearances and focus more on performing live and interacting with fans. Underground idols garner large fan bases, and their performances and events are always a lively affair.
The reason Yamame and the others are referred to as underground idols is simply because they often perform underground in places like the Underworld.
On this day, a certain corner of the Primate Spirit Garden was packed with people. A small stage had been set up, and the live performance taking place on it was filling the air with singing and passion. The three performers basked in cheers from the crowd and responded with beaming smiles.
"Thanks for all your support, everyone!" exclaimed the trio. Hearing such sincere words of thanks, the fans let out a cry of joy.
Sunlight doesn't reach places like the Underworld or Hell, but the three girls' smiles and singing voices shone every bit as bright as the sun.
Musical Madness: Rock Till Ya Drop!
The smallest events can lead people to start singing, form a band, and perform on stage, even those with no musical experience. That was exactly the case for a certain tsurube-otoshi, so it makes sense that her tsuchigumo friend would follow in her footsteps. And they are far from the only musical performers around. If you close your eyes and listen closely, you can hear beautiful music coming from all across Gensokyo.
After the show, the underground idols took some time to thank their fans, just as they always did. Then they made their way back to their dimly lit dressing room, which apparently looked rather odd, almost like a circuit board. Carefree laughter and excited chattering about the next performance could be heard from within. Even when they weren't on stage, the three girls were always smiling.
Their self-proclaimed producer watched over them from outside the dressing room while planning their next show. With sculpting tools in hand, she muttered to herself, "I think I'll make some haniwa backing dancers for next time. Oh, and maybe some extra staff members too."
