Character Information

Temperament: Gou'u
Gou'u (a Touhou LW original) refers to torrential, potentially disastrous rain. This Kisume is endowed with the temperament of onibi manipulation (Fire Phase), a dual personality (Moon Essence), and the mysterious spirit of a fallen god (Wood Phase). The formless and passionate Fire Phase resists Wood Phase, because wood feeds fire, but it is weak to Water Phase, because water dampens fire. The cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence resists the alluring and arrogant Sun Essence, but it is weak to the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence. The strong and kind Wood Phase resists Water Phase, because water nourishes wood, but it is weak to Metal Phase, because metal carves wood. The combination of Fire Phase and Wood Phase cancels out any resistance or weakness to Water Phase.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of dropping onibi (Prolonged)
The ability of Kisume from the world flooded with restless Underworld vengeful spirits (a Touhou LW original). It doesn't appear to be significantly different from Kisume's original ability. The 11th Prolonged Incident In the original incident, a geyser appeared in Gensokyo, and along with the hot water, detested vengeful spirits that had been sealed away in the Underworld long ago gushed up onto the surface. Evil beings appearing en masse from behind the shrine... Despite being the first time this had happened, it felt eerily familiar. The mastermind of the previous incident actually instigated this one, too, and its resolution directly led to the next incident. However, that only holds true if history follows its proper course. Regardless, Kisume should have only played a minor role in this incident. She didn't even speak to the humans trying to resolve it. Kisume is a tsurube-otoshi youkai. The defining characteristic of tsurube-otoshi is that they sit up in trees and drop things on people passing beneath them. They could drop anything from onibi and pots to severed heads. The origins of this particular youkai are debated, but it's almost certain that there is no one true origin. As is the case with most youkai, their appearance and traits tend to be an amalgamation of many different rumors and tales. The most famous youkai even have different names in different regions of Japan, corresponding to the predominant origin story in that area. However, over time, as communication across the country improved, similar youkai were consolidated under standardized names. Of course, just as there are occasionally mistakes made in the taxonomical categorization of living creatures, it's possible that some youkai were wrongly labeled as the same being. For physical creatures, this can be easily fixed by changing the names to reflect reality, but that doesn't work for spiritual beings like youkai. Even if it was a mistake, once they've been lumped together, they irrevocably merge. Picture this: you're walking in the woods at night when suddenly, you hear something heavy fall into the bush beside you. Thud! Or maybe you saw a suspicious ember or flame dropping to the ground. You don't know what it was, so when the story is retold, it gets exaggerated. "Long ago, a terrible tragedy occurred here." "The spirits of the dead still hold a grudge." "A god that is no longer worshipped went mad with rage." All groundless rumors, yet fertile soil for the seeds of hate. The following is more groundless speculation. There used to be a god called Oomoto, worshipped all over Japan. Or rather, that was just one of the many names attributed to this deity. In some places, they didn't even have a name. They were a kind of ancestor deity or ancestor spirit, yet not the deification of any one person in particular. Long ago, when people passed away in isolated villages, their remains would be respectfully buried beneath the biggest tree. This tree was also a landmark, indicating that the land up to here is safe from landslides. It also served as a physical representation of the divine ancestral spirits that protect the village, a tradition later inherited by stone grave markers and dousojin. Eventually, the old tree is seen as a repository of all the village's ancestors, and the priests and shrine maidens who care for it are respected as extensions of the god's authority and power. This is one example of how the first shrines might have come about. However, with the advent of the Central Myth and its many gods, these native gods were forgotten along with the ancestor spirits and those who worshipped them. All that remains is the warning: "You must not go beyond that tree." The sounds of landslides and falling rocks, the flames produced by volcanic gas or the phosphine built up in corpses, the glint of beastly eyes... all are attributed to supernatural beings. Now, even the shrine maidens who protected the ancient graveyards are a kind of youkai.

Attacks

Big Tree Spirits

The Spread Shot of Kisume from the world flooded with restless Underworld vengeful spirits (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with spirits that dwell in big trees. There's a voice whispering inside Kisume's head. "The only way to defend yourself is to strike first and strike hard." Is that her subconscious, her id as a youkai? Perhaps the Underworld is the bottom of a gravity well that pulls in and traps everything to do with hated youkai―their being, their thoughts, and even their time.

Kisume's Boulder

The Focus Shot of Kisume from the world flooded with restless Underworld vengeful spirits (a Touhou LW original). She drops one of the big rocks that are scattered about the Fantastic Blowhole. Long ago, the Underworld youkai made a pact with the youkai on the surface. In exchange for keeping the vengeful spirits down there, they'd be left alone. None of the surface youkai would be allowed to visit the Underworld. Is that why Kisume attacks intruders? Or is she protecting her territory? Perhaps she simply does what any free-spirited youkai would do when they spot potential prey. Whatever the case, she doesn't overthink it.

Origins of Oomoto Kagura

The Last Word of Kisume from the world flooded with restless Underworld vengeful spirits (a Touhou LW original). An attack evocative of an origin she has no memory of. "It's not like I want to act like some kind of gatekeeper and say they cannot pass. But... if I eat them, the humans will never go beyond me into the Underworld proper. I'll save everyone from the disaster they will surely cause. I never really thought about the past until now. Then again, I'm not even sure if these are my memories. The more I think about it, the less sense it makes. So, I stopped thinking. But if there really was a past where I lived happily together with humans... then I'm kinda sad it's gone."
