Character Information

Temperament: Kaenkou
Kaenkou (a Touhou LW original) refers to a type of halo that takes the form of blazing flames. This is an apt temperament for Shou, who tirelessly works toward setting Byakuren free. She is endowed with Metal Phase, representing her unwavering resolve, Sun Essence, representing her deep faith, and Fire Phase, the temperament of her Tobatsu Armor. The cold and silent Metal Phase resists Earth Phase, because earth bears metal, but it is weak to Fire Phase, because fire refines metal. The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence. The formless and passionate Fire Phase resists Wood Phase, because wood feeds fire, but it is weak to Water Phase, because water dampens fire.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of gathering treasure (Prolonged)
The ability of Shou from the world with a high-flying treasure ship (a Touhou LW original). There is no noticeable difference between her ability and the abilities of Shous from other worlds. The 12th Prolonged Incident This incident was originally caused by youkai who escaped from the Underworld in an effort to free the great magician sealed away in Makai. Within Makai lies Hokkai, a place sealed by a barrier. To lift the seal, Shou's Jeweled Pagoda and the Palanquin Ship were both required. However, parts of the Palanquin Ship had scattered as Flying Storehouse fragments and needed to be recovered. The UFO-like items collected by Reimu and the other humans were actually fragments of the Flying Storehouse, which the youkai had been attempting to recover. Had the humans cooperated, the matter might have been resolved peacefully, but that never happened. Nevertheless, the seal was lifted, and the humans ultimately came face to face with the great magician, Byakuren Hijiri. The unity and cooperation shown by the youkai can be attributed to Byakuren's exceptional virtue and the evident depth of her faith. Despite having been separated for over a thousand years, they never lost their regard for one another. Their bond endured even after they suffered severe humiliation at the hands of humans who likely once followed the same teachings. Neither Byakuren nor her disciples initially displayed overt hostility toward humans. If anything, their actions suggest an inclination toward forgiveness. It is difficult to find another example of a youkai group that maintained such orderly cooperation over such a long period of time. The following deductions were made based on the available true data. Fearing the youkai who resided in the temple, humans sealed Byakuren away in Makai and buried her youkai disciples in the Underworld. Shou Toramaru, however, was an exception. She could not abandon her role as Bishamonten, the temple's principal deity, and most likely stayed behind as a being worshipped by humans. The weight of receiving such devotion from those who had persecuted her teacher and fellow disciples is difficult to fathom. The way humans changed their attitude the moment someone was revealed to be a youkai exposed a frightening truth hidden beneath their faith. Forced to conceal her own nature as a tiger youkai, she continued living behind a false identity. She also carried the shame and guilt of not trying to save Byakuren and her friends, even though she knew she had no other option. Those feelings must have lingered, at least until the humans were gone. Eventually, the temple fell into ruin and was abandoned. Had worshippers continued to visit, this would not have happened, no matter how much time passed. Human faith was likely not passed down, or the temple was forgotten entirely. Its many treasures were taken by humans. Left behind was a stand-in Bishamonten, who remembered everything. That alone was enough to meet the conditions for being welcomed into Gensokyo. Shou heard a familiar voice call out to her and realized that Byakuren's companions, who were sealed in the Underworld, had returned. Along with the ruined temple that the Flying Storehouse had transformed into, Shou was also accepted into the Underworld of Gensokyo. Nazrin probably remained by Shou's side throughout this time, continuing to carry out the duties entrusted to her by Bishamonten. The above deductions are based on several underlying assumptions. 1. The Underworld is part of Gensokyo, located within the inner layer of the double barrier that surrounds it. 2. The other disciples were first sealed in Hell, prior to its transformation into Former Hell. 3. After becoming Former Hell, it became recognized as Gensokyo's Underworld. 4. Parts of the Flying Storehouse were stripped away by humans and scattered as temple treasures. After their significance was forgotten, they eventually became Flying Storehouse fragments dispersed throughout Gensokyo. The Tobatsu Armor is a fine enchanted artifact. The artifacts wielded by Shou's fellow disciples were originally magic items that were a part of this enchanted artifact. Each of these artifacts is composed of three elements. The first element is a finely crafted replica of a treasure belonging to Bishamonten himself. They were entrusted to Shou, envoy of Bishamonten, and Nazrin, his messenger. They were originally worn by Shou as personal artifacts to ensure she would be recognized as Bishamonten, and are therefore not particularly rare, as similar artifacts are commonly depicted in paintings and statues. The second element is a treasure left behind by Myouren, the Flying Storehouse. It carries spiritual power derived from Myouren's faith and virtue. Myouren was an exceptionally powerful high priest, and the items he possessed naturally came to hold power as a result. The Flying Storehouse was used as a temple and later fell into ruin. However, the portions that remained intact were brought to Gensokyo along with Shou. As this treasure serves as the foundation of the Palanquin Ship, only parts of it are used to make the enchanted artifacts. The final element is Byakuren's own faith. According to existing interpretations, Bishamonten granted Byakuren additional power because of her faith. This element serves as a key factor in an item's transformation into an enchanted artifact. However, the point at which this condition was fulfilled remains unknown. The enchanted artifacts associated with Shou initially manifested as her personal artifacts. Through her efforts to preserve them and prevent them from being scattered, they were eventually passed on to her companions. These artifacts can probably take a compact form, small enough to be concealed as simple accessories.

Attacks

Radiant Treasures

The Spread Shot of Shou Toramaru from the world with a high-flying treasure ship (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with the radiance of her treasures. These are not the dazzling riches of the material world, but treasures that represent a world that has been redeemed. People with weak or wavering hearts are best guided by something clear and tangible. And because youkai have no interest in turning such treasure into money, entrusting them to Shou likely aligned with Bishamonten's own interests as well.

Purifying Light

The Focus Shot of Shou Toramaru from the world with a high-flying treasure ship (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with the radiance of her treasures. Modern human science might find this hard to believe, but the luster of gold and other precious materials once inspired feelings of spiritual purity and conceptual growth. Today, precious metals and jewels are valued only as adornments. Can such a world really be called prosperous? Their worth was originally defined by traditional aesthetics. In the past, humans found magic in their radiance.

Jeweled Pagoda: Radiant Treasure Gun

A Spell Card of Shou Toramaru from the world with a high-flying treasure ship. She attacks with the intense radiance of her treasures. Those exposed to the light of Shou Toramaru's Jeweled Pagoda are said to turn into jewels. A truly terrifying thing, but it also reveals her complete indifference to the economic value of treasure. If jewels could be acquired so easily, they would eventually flood the streets and lose all worth. Treasure is precious precisely because it is rare and difficult to obtain. In that sense, perhaps faith works the same way. Proper training means refining the heart, like polishing a rough gem to reveal its shine. Enlightenment cannot be gained from simply being struck by a beam of light. Actual growth must come from within. However, science does offer examples of laser-emitting jewels.

Complete Clarification

A Spell Card of Shou Toramaru from the world with a high-flying treasure ship. She attacks with the intense radiance of her treasures. Considering that Shou Toramaru is a youkai by nature, what does salvation even mean to her? The idea that all beings possess the inherent potential to attain Buddhahood holds that all things are bound to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Even grass and stones are still in training. Youkai are no exception, which is why many of them have names associated with Buddhist monks. However, the idea that youkai seek salvation of the soul―much like the notion that vampires fear the cross because of their own religious faith―feels like an explanation shaped to suit human thinking. Youkai faith is probably much simpler than that.

Tobatsu - Fake Four Heavenly Kings Armor

The Last Word of Shou Toramaru from the world with a high-flying treasure ship (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with her enchanted artifact and an intense prayer for salvation. Perhaps Nazrin was the only one who witnessed everything from beginning to end. If Shou had not blamed herself, she would never have allowed the humans to seal away Byakuren and her companions. But Shou wasn't weak. If she was, she would have abandoned her responsibility long ago. Was it fear of Bishamonten's punishment that kept her from running? Or confidence that this wasn't that big a deal? It was probably neither. Shou blamed herself countless times, and just as often came close to giving up. She may have felt that her trust in Byakuren and the others was merely because she was overly dependent on them, and that her faith in Bishamonten was nothing more than an excuse born from her own weakness. Even so, Shou chose to believe. In time, she understood that belief is the act of confronting doubts without turning away. Watching Shou struggle through this, Nazrin became certain that Bishamonten would forgive a wavering heart that strives to believe, and that Byakuren would continue waiting until the day they save her.
