Character Information

Temperament: Eigenjitsu
Eigenjitsu (a Touhou LW original) refers to the rainbow-like bands of light that appear on either side of the Sun. This is an apt temperament for Aunn, whose devotion to Shintoism and Buddhism borders on reverence. She is endowed with Earth Phase for her broad, nurturing sense of protection, and Sun Essence, befitting a divine beast. The encompassing and regenerative Earth Phase resists Fire Phase, because fire produces earth, but it is weak to Wood Phase, because wood parts earth. The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of locating Shintoism and Buddhism (Prolonged)
The ability of Aunn Komano from the world where the four seasons are in total disarray (a Touhou LW original). There is no noticeable difference between her ability and the abilities of Aunns from other worlds. The 16th Prolonged Incident. This is a world where the Four Seasons Incident never ended. Okina Matara is searching for successors to her two servants while also being upset with Gensokyo's increasingly lax system. And no, no one is allowed to point out that she's a sage, meaning the system's decline is partly her fault. A secret god is one whose divinity is sustained only by staying a secret, but must still display her power to gather followers. It's a paradox through and through, and the fact that such a deity deigns to reveal herself at all is something to be grateful for. Some secrets must be revealed, while some mysteries refuse to die even then. By that measure alone, Okina might be the most divine deity around. The problem is that Aunn Komano received her powers from Okina. But Aunn seems largely indifferent to the fact that her powers come from Okina, choosing instead to prolong the incident however she likes. The abilities of Okina's two servants are originally Okina's own, and they are essentially extensions of her. So it stands to reason that Eternity Larva, Nemuno Sakata, Aunn Komano, and Narumi Yatadera all received their powers from Okina. Of the two servants, Mai was the one actively scouting candidates, while Satono seemed far more cautious. That contrast may well have been a reflection of Okina's own inner thoughts. What made those four candidates promising remains a mystery, though Aunn might have stood out because she is a divine beast pair, making her a natural fit for a secret god's servant. That said, the choices don't seem entirely consistent. Larva is a fairy, and she got scouted, but Cirno didn't. As for Nemuno, no one really knows what Okina saw in her. In fact, Nemuno doesn't seem to have been scouted at all. She may have simply joined the battle with her usual abilities. It's possible there never was a clear policy behind Okina's selection process in the first place. This Aunn has no intention of getting in the way of resolving the incident, but she ends up obstructing it all the same. Especially when Reimu Hakurei is the one she crosses paths with. All Aunn wanted to do was protect Hakurei Shrine, but Reimu treats her like a suspicious trespasser. If history had followed its proper course, she would've beaten her up for it. However, a guardian beast with too much power is as good as an overwhelming, disaster-class monster. Aunn is like an overprotective mom. Particularly when it comes to Reimu. Just as most humans can't remember anything from their early childhood, Aunn doesn't seem to remember much from before she awakened. And maybe because of that, it looks as though those old memories have been overwritten altogether. Once a memory is rewritten, the person assumes it's their real past, and anything that was once known only to them would also end up being overwritten, which is a fairly serious issue. Aunn ended up acting like Reimu's self-appointed mom. She even talks about the previous shrine maiden as if she'd been there to witness everything herself. However, there's no proof either way, so it's possible that she's telling the truth.

Attacks

Moriya Shrine Freeloader

The Spread Shot of Aunn Komano from the world where the four seasons are in total disarray (a Touhou LW original). She recalls the time she spent serving as a komainu at Moriya Shrine. There is currently no true data stating that Aunn ever guarded Moriya Shrine. However, she claims to have quietly watched over various shrines and temples, so she may well have been at Moriya Shrine or at Myouren Temple without anyone noticing. After all, it took people a while to notice she was at Hakurei Shrine. Shrines and temples are filled with stone statues. What's one extra? Still, the fact that she stealthily switched locations is impressive.

Myouren Temple Freeloader

The Focus Shot of Aunn Komano from the world where the four seasons are in total disarray (a Touhou LW original). She recalls the time she spent serving as a komainu at Myouren Temple. But the question is: did Myouren Temple ever have komainu? It probably did. The tradition of having komainu came from temples to begin with, long before shrines adopted it during the Shinto-Buddhist syncretism period. Even so, there aren't that many temples that still have them today. In a way, komainu have wandered across religious boundaries. Does that mean they have some hidden ability to warp? Dogs were the first animals to go into space, so maybe komainu really do have a talent for crossing into other worlds.

Spinning Top: Curl Up and Die

A Spell Card of Aunn Komano from the world where the four seasons are in total disarray. A dog dashes across a spring courtyard, leaving curly dog fur spinning through the air. Komainu, statues of lion-like creatures, originally came in pairs. Their origins trace back to somewhere on the continent of Asia, North Africa, or the Middle East. All three regions are widely known as paradises for divine beasts.

Koma Sign: Solitary A-Un Breathing

A Spell Card of Aunn Komano from the world where the four seasons are in total disarray. This is a pair attack performed by one. The komainu are descendants of divine beasts that traveled long and far across the Silk Road and other land and sea routes. The word A-Un is the transliteration in Japanese of the Sanskrit syllable Aum or Om. The original Sanskrit term is composed of two letters, the first and the last of the Sanskrit alphabet. Together, they symbolically represent the beginning and the end of all things, and by extension, everything in between. It makes perfect sense, then, that in Gensokyo, Aunn is linked to Hakurei Shrine at the eastern edge where the Sun rises, and to the season of spring. Spring completes the cycle of the four seasons, just as sunrise completes the cycle of morning, noon, evening, and night. And because the Silk Road links one end of the world to the other, Aunn can even be seen as a symbol that binds the world as a whole.

Season of Alpha and Omega

The Last Word of Aunn Komano from the world where the four seasons are in total disarray (a Touhou LW original). A Mobius loop attack in which the beginning and the end are seamlessly bound together. The space between the two figures that make up a komainu pair is said to be a path that leads straight to the gods. This space functions like a conduit between two opposites, like the north and south poles of a magnet, or positive and negative electric charges. It's a spiritually charged line, much like a linear rail that guides energy in a fixed direction, or a warp gate that instantaneously connects distant points. In some rare cases, there's a statue of a third beast that stands between the komainu pair at the starting point. That beast is known as a qilin. And it's not just any qilin, but one with wings. In a sense, the statue is a symbolic culmination of the fusion between East and West.
