Character Information

Temperament: Reimei
Reimei (a Touhou LW original) refers to dawn. Kutaka is endowed with Water Phase since she directs the deceased to their destinations and Sun Essence because she maintains the flow of souls. This Kutaka is also endowed with Wood Phase, the temperament of chickens. The flexible and patient Water Phase resists Metal Phase, because metal collects water, but it is weak to Earth Phase, because earth directs water. The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence. The strong and kind Wood Phase resists Water Phase, because water nourishes wood, but it is weak to Metal Phase, because metal carves wood. The combination of Water Phase and Wood Phase cancels out any resistance or weakness to Metal Phase.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of healing throat illnesses (Prolonged)
The ability of Kutaka Niwatari from the world drowning in black water (a Touhou LW original). This ability doesn't seem that different from the Kutaka of our world's ability. The 17.5th Prolonged Incident Black water welled up from the Underworld to Gensokyo. This led many people to head to the Underworld, some to investigate and stop the black water, others for their own secret purposes. But someone was down there waiting for them... Under orders from her boss, the Yama, Kutaka began investigating a hole that someone had opened in the bottom of the Sanzu River, causing water to cascade into the Underworld. She headed down there to ascertain the extent of the damage, how to fix it, and find the culprit. Kutaka is not only the god of chickens (Niwatarijin) but also the god of water distribution (Mikumari) and the god who delivers souls of the deceased to their destination (Oniwatari), making her the ideal candidate for investigating the depths of the Underworld that is teeming with restless spirits. However, all these abilities also mean that she is more than capable of prolonging this incident... In other worlds, Minamitsu Murasa was the one who opened the hole in the Sanzu River, and there is no reason to assume that this world, with the prolonged incident, is any different. Minamitsu claimed that she needed to fill the Blazing Hell with water to reach the source of the black water. However, she failed to realize that flooding the Underworld with water was, in fact, the most efficient way to bring the black water to the surface. In the outside world, this is known as waterflooding or water injection, and it is a relatively simple but effective method of extracting black water, aka petroleum, from oil reservoirs. This was the perfect opportunity for Kutaka to acquire lots of petroleum since she potentially has complete control over the Sanzu River's water with her position and abilities. Why would she close the hole when she could use it for all its worth? Anyone who knows Kutaka would say that she would never do something so dishonest, but the thing with gods is that they have multiple faces. They can be kind and generous one moment and terribly vengeful the next. Perhaps her instincts as a god unwittingly compelled her to gather petroleum to boost her faith and spirit power. However, it's still unclear whether petroleum can actually be used in this way.

Attacks

Chicken Call

The Spread Shot of Kutaka Niwatari from the world drowning in black water (a Touhou LW original). A chicken clucks in this attack. Unbeknownst to Kutaka, she had grown bigger due to an increase in spirit power. Similar to how humans can increase their stamina and energy by increasing the size of their muscles, gods seem to materialize in bigger forms to accommodate larger reserves of spirit power. However, just like how an inchling can defeat a giant, differences in spirit power, as indicated by size, are not insurmountable obstacles. Think of weight classes in martial arts―if all the other variables are equal, the combatant with more spirit power has a significant advantage.

Early Song

The Focus Shot of Kutaka Niwatari from the world drowning in black water (a Touhou LW original). She heralds the dawn in this attack. Gods don't usually have tangible forms. Instead, they display their power through messengers and envoys. The type of messenger employed depends on the god, but most use some kind of animal, with snakes, monkeys, and foxes being the most common. Some gods even use chickens.

Niwatari: Picturesque View of Former Hell

A Spell Card of Kutaka Niwatari from the world drowning in black water. She clucks to direct phantoms in this attack. This Kutaka is a god AND the animal messenger of a god. The way gods communicate through animal messengers is similar to how humans pray to gods through shrine maidens. That explains why Kutaka's attire resembles a shrine maiden's outfit.

Niwatari: Algorithmic Phantom

A Spell Card of Kutaka Niwatari from the world drowning in black water. She clucks to direct phantoms in this attack. Unlike other Kutakas, what looks like this Kutaka's tail is actually her hair. As she gained power, her hair grew longer and longer, but Kutaka was utterly oblivious to it, only noticing that her bangs might need a trim.

Sanzu Flood - Drowning Grief & Greed

The Last Word of Kutaka Niwatari from the world drowning in black water (a Touhou LW original). Water comes gushing out of holes in the bottom of the Sanzu River. It was blatantly apparent that Kutaka became stronger as she headed deeper into the Underworld... even, finally, to Kutaka herself. She felt taller, her wings had grown larger, and she noticed that she now possessed vast stores of spirit power. Her hair, which acts as a vessel for divine power, had also grown longer.
