Willfully Busy Shikigami (Unfinished)

Kitsune-ame (a Touhou LW original) refers to rain that falls while the Sun is shining. This is an apt temperament for Ran, the shikigami who was ordered by her master, Yukari Yakumo, to investigate the phantoms. In addition to her original temperament (Moon Essence), she is also imbued with temperaments that allow her to venture underground (Earth Phase and Fire Phase). The encompassing and regenerative Earth Phase resists Fire Phase, because fire produces earth, but it is weak to Wood Phase, because wood parts earth. The formless and passionate Fire Phase resists Wood Phase, because wood feeds fire, but it is weak to Water Phase, because water dampens fire. The combination of Earth Phase and Fire Phase cancels out any resistance or weakness to Wood Phase. The cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence resists the alluring and arrogant Sun Essence, but it is weak to the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence.
The ability of Ran Yakumo from the world of greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). This ability doesn't seem any different from the Ran of our world's ability. In this world, there are only a handful of sages. They dwell in distant lands alongside spirit deities. A divine mountain beyond the sea, far above the clouds, Mount Hourai, Shangri-La, Agartha, El Dorado, Nirai Kanai, Elysium, Avalon, Tir na nog, Tokoyo no Kuni, the Dragon Palace, Xanadu, Tamoanchan, Arcadia, Zipangu... All of which are so-called paradises. The sages worship ideals that everyone, even young children, recognizes as important―like love and hope. The sages are the roots of knowledge, the branches on the great tree of wisdom that hide away to preserve these ideals. Those who pursue knowledge in the outside world, like scientists, philosophers, and scholars, collect droplets of knowledge and fallen twigs of wisdom, indulging in the fantasy that they, too, are sages. Now then, do beasts possess intelligence? Following the orders of her master, Yukari Yakumo, Ran launched an investigation into the incident. Before long, she found herself in the land of beasts, where she once lived, and came face to face with an old acquaintance―rumors about whose activities she had been hearing for a long time. In that moment, Ran recalled her former life and realized that the Animal Realm was a place utterly unlike those in which the sages reside. It was a land ruled not by intellect, but by instinct; a land where they do not drink the blessed rains that fall from the heavens, but rather lap up the blood of conflict that springs from the earth. Ran left the Animal Realm precisely because she was unable to stand that side of it. And even now, she offers no reason to believe her opinion has changed. But her reunion with Yuuma Toutetsu sparked a quiet shift within her. Suddenly, she was tempted to withhold information from her master and to arrange secret meetings. That could be seen as a regression into her former, beast-like self, but, ironically, it could also be seen as a step toward truly independent thinking. However, Ran was still a long way from realizing who REALLY pulls the strings in the Animal Realm.
The Spread Shot of Ran Yakumo from the world of greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). A shikigami's shikigami attacks. Shikigami can be considered a type of familiar, but they can also be considered the result of summoning magic. So what about shikigami summoned from cat paper dolls and shikigami that literally are cat paper dolls? Are they all the same being―i.e., parallel versions of Chen? Or are there other cat shikigami besides Chen? This is far from the most tantalizing mystery in Gensokyo, but it certainly is one of them.
The Focus Shot of Ran Yakumo from the world of greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). A shikigami's shikigami attacks. Looking at past Spell Cards, it seems that Chen may not be the only shikigami under Ran's control. Although it's possible these additional shikigami are virtual beings, created solely to be used in her Spell Cards. That said, there's evidence of Yukari Yakumo employing Zenki and Goki as her shikigami, so perhaps Ran occasionally borrows shikigami from her master.
A Spell Card of Ran Yakumo from the world of greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). Chen, a shikigami's shikigami, attacks. Chen is a bakeneko shikigami under the control of Ran Yakumo. Ran herself serves as a shikigami to Yukari Yakumo, while also holding the authority to control shikigami of her own. In other words, she is both a shikigami and a shikigami-user.
A Spell Card of Ran Yakumo from the world of greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). Chen, a shikigami's shikigami, attacks. Chen is good friends with Rin Kaenbyou, a beast youkai pet from the Palace of the Earth Spirits. Chen has even begun imitating her habit of collecting corpses―a development that is deeply troubling for Ran, her shikigami master.
The Last Word of Ran Yakumo from the world of greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). She recalls her time in the Animal Realm in this attack. Back then, Ran did not yet bear the Yakumo name, and Yuuma was not the head of the Gouyoku Alliance. It's said there were no cities in the Animal Realm, only wastelands stretching as far as the eye could see... It's believed Ran left out of disgust for Yuuma's beastly ideology. At that time, was Ran a beast spirit? What path did she take from the Animal Realm to Gensokyo? And what was life like during her days in that unforgiving land? So many questions, so few answers! What is clear, however, is that Ran and Yuuma share a long and complex history.
She hoped this was all a natural phenomenon. That would have made things so much easier.
Phantoms, beast youkai, animal spirits. All this mess just because the ownership of some land was released.
These paper dolls are Chen, right? There are so many of her!
