Temperament: Suiri-nagi
Suiri-nagi (a Touhou LW original) refers to the period of calm winds around April. It is an apt temperament for Sanae, who tries far too hard to meet the gods' unreasonable demands. To stand against the earth spirits and the animal spirits of the Animal Realm, she has sealed away her connection to the Three Essences, leaving her with just the Five Phases. The strong and kind Wood Phase resists Water Phase, because water nourishes wood, but it is weak to Metal Phase, because metal carves wood.

The ability of Sanae Kochiya from the world of overly greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). There is no noticeable difference between her ability and the abilities of Sanaes from other worlds. There was once an incident that saw a chaotic clash between animal spirits, beast youkai, and a horde of phantoms who emerged during a dispute over land ownership. While things played out as the human-oni in Hell, Zanmu Nippaku, intended, it was ultimately resolved thanks to the efforts of the Hakurei shrine maiden and her allies. This incident also demonstrated the important role Gensokyo plays in the power struggles between other realms, such as Hell and the Animal Realm. No one wished for the incident to drag on, and there seemed to be no signs that it would. Sanae Kochiya is a scientifically minded girl who's not so great with history. When phantoms started stirring up trouble over land ownership, she was ordered to investigate by Kanako and Suwako. She had no complaints, though. After all, it was hardly the first time she had been ordered to investigate something. However, she felt it was about time they recognized her as a full-fledged shrine maiden. Upon starting her investigation, she discovered that it wasn't just phantoms causing trouble―it was animal spirits, too. Sanae couldn't help but think that it would be quicker for Kanako and Suwako to deal with them, given their deep ties to snakes and frogs and their regular contact with the animal youkai on the Youkai Mountain. Perhaps it was a rare slug spirit that she came into contact with. Or maybe it was the ninja blood in her veins awakening, the truth of which was hidden in Moriya Shrine's history. Then again, it might have all just been in her head, with her own power having simply kicked in. Whatever the case, Sanae was fired up. With her newfound strength, she could resolve the incident before Reimu or Marisa and subdue both the beast youkai and animal spirits. She might even be able to impress the powers that be in Hell and gain some new divine authority. If that happened, Kanako and Suwako would surely be relieved, and faith in their shrine would skyrocket―Sanae was sure of it. Little did she know, she was the reason the incident wasn't being resolved...

This person is also said to be connected to the origin of Moriya Shrine. That said, shrines' origin stories are seldom simple. The nature of faith has changed time and again throughout history.

Unlike Hakurei Shrine, which has existed in Gensokyo for at least a thousand years, Moriya Shrine was located in the outside world until quite recently. In other words, it held out in its fight for survival for a remarkably long time. There are many old shrines that have managed to preserve local faith by repeatedly changing the name of their deity or rewriting their origin story. But the big question... is whether there really is a connection between Moriya Shrine and ninjas! Sanae is simply dying to know.

Sanae was deeply moved by a story she read that featured a protagonist who wandered into the Underworld and transformed into a serpent. To her, it had an unmistakable connection to Moriya Shrine. But predictably, neither Kanako nor Suwako offered any confirmation. After all, faith is shaped by those who keep it, and what a single shrine maiden chooses to believe carries very little weight.

The Last Word of Sanae Kochiya from the world of overly greedy beasts (a Touhou LW original). An angelic flying slug attacks. Sanae was stunned. She didn't know if it was the influence of the animal spirits, but an unknown power was surging through her body. Kanako and Suwako seemed flustered, but that didn't stop her. With this power, she should be able to stand her ground against the human-oni in Hell, Zanmu Nippaku. That meant she would get the chance to question her. Using what little knowledge of history she had and researching as best she could, Sanae had concluded that Zanmu was likely familiar with the era of ninjas. And if she did, then maybe she knew something about the ninja origin story of Moriya Shrine. Sanae couldn't wait to finally learn the truth!
