With Gensokyo gone, the Capital could no longer maintain the systems necessary for its survival. Countless attempts were made to compensate, but that only sparked further conflict. In the end, they appointed a new leader, who gambled everything on abandoning their universe in search of another. Ys and Xanadu were two of the organizations that opposed the Capital during this time. Xanadu was dragged into the Capital's interworld transfer, while Ys was left behind. This unfolded on May 1st, which is why it is often referred to as the Mayday Event or the Mayday Shock.

As a member of Xanadu, she crossed into another world with the Capital. She sought a way to return to her original world. But she couldn't do it. Why? Because she had no idea where that world was.

But what if the beach were filled with near-identical grains, and the search had to begin by categorizing them all? What if countless grains looked the same at 10x magnification, but were different at 100x magnification? The deeper Yukari's investigation went, the longer each decision took. The closer she got to the answer, the more factors she had to consider. And because she can manipulate boundaries, she inevitably ran into the frame problem.

After all, copying someone else's work is only cheating when it's against the rules.

Even if Yukari and the others wished to restore Gensokyo, they themselves were already impure beyond recognition. That made it impossible for them to purify each other. So what could be done? The only option was to seek aid from someone that had already been lost from Gensokyo before its end. But if they were lost, surely there was no way to find them. It was a contradiction, as plain as they come. But what choice did Yukari and the others have?
