The usual outfit of Sanae from the world delirious with eternal summer. What year did she come to Gensokyo again?
Yuunagi (a Touhou LW original) refers to the calm sea in the evening when there is nary a breeze to speak of. This is the perfect temperament for Sanae, a wind priestess who thoroughly enjoys the eternal summer. Sanae makes sure to protect her skin from the harsh summer Sun. (Strong against Sun Essence.) She makes an effort to keep up with the latest trends. (Strong against Star Essence.) At low tide, she digs for clams in the sand. (Strong against Earth Phase.) But she heads back home when the tide rises. (Weak against Water Phase.)
The ability of Sanae Kochiya from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). This ability seems to be pretty much the same as the abilities possessed by Sanaes from other worlds. Being only a novice student of history, Sanae was struggling to wrap her head around the seemingly contradictory legends surrounding Moriya Shrine's origins. Somehow, Moriya Shrine has a connection to the ocean, even though it was situated in a mountainous region of Japan before it moved to Gensokyo. "Sanae, what are those balls you're holding...?" "Balls? ...Oh, do you mean these?" The Sun was setting as Sakuya and Sanae chatted on the beach. In response to Sakuya's question, Sanae held up two round jewels that glowed with a mysterious light. "I found them hidden away in the shrine's storeroom... I don't really know what they are." "In a storeroom? That checks out." Sakuya is well acquainted with the Scarlet Devil Mansion's storeroom, which holds all kinds of mysterious and unexpected items. Perhaps the same could be said of storerooms everywhere. "I asked Lady Kanako and Lady Suwako about them, but the explanation they gave me was super confusing... I'm guessing they don't really want me to know what they are." "Are you sure it's not just a complicated topic?" "Maybe you're right... Either way, I've discovered that jewels like these often appear in legends and stories about the Dragon Palace!" "By the Dragon Palace... do you mean the Lunar Capital?" Sanae thought it was odd that Sakuya's first response was to assume she was talking about the Lunar Capital. She had heard talk that the Lunar Capital might actually be the Dragon Palace. But who's to say if that's true or not? There might even be multiple Dragon Palaces. Sanae hopes that there is a Dragon Palace somewhere beneath the waves. And if there is, she'd love to go and see it.
The Spread Shot of Sanae Kochiya from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She finds a mysterious jewel that causes the tide to rise. The Tide-Ebbing and Tide-Flowing Jewels are a pair of orbs that can control the ocean tides. They feature in many different legends and folktales. Sanae thinks they must be some kind of Izanagi Object!
The Focus Shot of Sanae Kochiya from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She finds a mysterious jewel that causes the tide to fall. It's said that the tide jewels are treasures from the Dragon Palace and that two islands sprung up where they were buried. Considering the apparent connection between the Dragon Palace and the Lunar Capital and how the Moon's gravitational pull largely determines the rise and fall of the tides... perhaps these jewels are actually devices used to manipulate gravitational forces!
A Spell Card of Sanae Kochiya from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She recalls one of her hometown's creation myths. Some of the legends and folktales passed down in Suwa contradict those told in the central regions of Japan. This is indicative of how the people of Suwa have historically asserted their independence from and equality with the central regions. They even have their own creation myth that describes how Suwa used to be a vast inland ocean that was then made habitable when a god tore down a mountain to let the water out. "Is that true, Lady Kanako, Lady Suwako?!"
A Spell Card of Sanae Kochiya from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). This attack is reminiscent of life during the Age of the Gods. Chestnuts were a popular food source in the Jomon era (14,000 to 300 BC). It was formerly believed that people still hadn't developed horticulture or agriculture back then until evidence was found that they tended to groves of chestnut trees. Lately, some scholars believe they might have even started to cultivate rice during this time. It's theorized that clams are called "hamaguri" in Japanese because they are found on the beach (hama) and look like chestnuts (guri), even though there is evidence that suggests they were also eaten in the Jomon era. Incidentally, the kanji character for giant clams (oohamaguri) is shared with the mythical creature known as a mizuchi or shen that resembles a dragon. This surprising connection between shellfish and dragons can also be seen with triton sea snails. When a triton sea snail reaches 9,000 years of age after living in the mountains, in a human village, and under the sea, they transform into a draconic youkai called a shussebora.
The Last Word of Sanae Kochiya from the world delirious with eternal summer (a Touhou LW original). She unleashes a super cool and flashy attack on the beach. There is a legend about how an empress of Japan received the Ebbing-Tide and Flowing-Tide Jewels as a gift from the Dragon Palace on her return journey across the ocean. However, variants of this tale state that the jewels were actually gifted to the god Azumi no Isora or that the empress's little sister, Toyohime, who was also a shrine maiden, went to the Dragon Palace to receive them. "Toyo" was another word for "shrine maiden" in the southwestern regions of Japan, and "hime" means princess. Kanako claimed that the Toyohime in the tale actually referred to her, but that just made Sanae even more confused. This was because she had previously heard the legend of the two brother deities Hoori and Hikohohode. In that tale, Hoori, the younger brother, received two magical orbs from a princess of the Dragon Palace called Toyotamahime. It seems that all the complex connections between gods is a lot to wrap your head around, even for a living god like Sanae.
"Before I came to Gensokyo, I was obsessed with all the fancy fashion trends in Tokyo."
"I used these to play in the sand when I was little. I would reenact divine myths and legends!"
"Please teach me more about Moriya Shrine's history, Lady Suwako, Lady Kanako."
