Character Information

Temperament: Yaegiri
Yaegiri (a Touhou LW original) refers to deep, layered fog. This is the perfect temperament for Komachi, the ferrywoman who babysits a fairy during the changing of the seasons between summer and autumn. "Sorry, it's my day off." (Strong against Sun Essence.) "Getting mad won't change anything. I've got other stuff to do." (Strong against Fire Phase.) "Paying double the ferry fare won't help either. Go ask another shinigami." (Strong against Metal Phase.) "What?! You just really want to take a ride on MY boat?! It's not a tourist attraction. Fine... Just this once." (Weak to Water Phase.)
Ability/Backstory: Capable of manipulating distance (Hot Spring)
The ability of Komachi Onozuka from the world obsessed with escaping the heat (a Touhou LW original). This ability doesn't seem that different from the Komachi of our world's ability. It is often the case that the calendar may say it's autumn, even though it's still as hot as summer. This period of lingering heat between the changing of seasons continues for eternity in this world. But how does that work? If you break up a day into different time blocks, "morning" and "evening" feel transitory, whereas "day" and "night" feel fixed and stable. However, in truth, the duration of day and night is always changing. Due to the seasons and the fact that the Earth's a globe, it's even possible for some places to have extended mornings or evenings, where it's dark for the whole day or bright for the whole night. Put simply, terms like "morning" and "evening" are subjective, but since they are short in most places, they are used to denote the periods of transition between day, when it's bright, and night, when it's dark. Evening, in particular, has long been thought of as the time when you are most likely to encounter supernatural beings because the boundary between day and night is so murky. A similar phenomenon can be seen with the seasons. It is believed that the barrier between this world and the next is less defined when the seasons change. This coincides with how Obon, a festival that honors ancestral spirits, is held when summer changes to autumn. If a planet existed that rotated about its horizontal axis, causing one half to always be in light and the other in shadow, the line in the middle would be a land of perpetual twilight. The weather there would feel like a constant mix between summer and autumn due to the wind crossing between the two hemispheres. Komachi Onozuka was concerned. She had never babysitted before and would much rather use her day off to laze about. Did taking care of a fairy even count as babysitting? But what was most concerning was that she was being asked to babysit by THE goddess of Hell, Lady Hecatia. The fairy in question was Clownpiece, a Hell fairy who usually lives under Hakurei Shrine. She returns home to Hell a few times each year to visit her master, Hecatia, who dotes on her something wicked. They get along so well that they often get mistaken for sisters or mother and daughter. Clownpiece was returning home again, and while Hecatia desperately wanted to spend time with her, unfortunately, she had already booked a hot spring vacation with Eiki. So, not wanting Clownpiece to feel lonely, she hurriedly arranged for Komachi to watch over her. Komachi was also asked to take her to enjoy the games and food at the festival, see the fireworks, and maybe even take a cheeky dip in a hot spring. That all sounded pretty fun to Komachi, but the problem was that Hecatia is basically Eiki's boss. She couldn't afford to mess this up. You might think she was taking this surprisingly seriously for being such a lazy shinigami, but that would be misinterpreting the stakes. She can only work at her own pace (read: laze about) because she has a stable job. If the boss of her boss asks her for a "favor," she has no choice but to obey! She felt bad for Clownpiece, but she had planned a fairly boring itinerary solely to avoid any disasters that she wouldn't be able to atone for. "How do I look, Miss Komachi?! Does this yukata suit me?! Thanks for helping me put it on! And for doing my hair... It made me super happy!" Wow. Komachi was expecting to babysit a stubborn and cheeky kid, but Piece was surprisingly polite and well-mannered. She also looked adorable dressed up in her yukata. Komachi had begun to understand why the Hell goddess doted on her so much... She was now determined to make sure Clownpiece had a good time. And once she decided that, she found that she was looking forward to it, too.

Attacks

Miss Urumi's Goldfish Anima

The Spread Shot of Komachi Onozuka from the world obsessed with escaping the heat (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with the cool anima of a goldfish. "Hey, Miss Komachi. Are you on kid duty today?" Urumi greeted Komachi as she and Clownpiece passed her goldfish scooping stand. Komachi got on well with Urumi since they both work on the Sanzu River, but it was still a bit off-putting to hear a nure-onna talk about her and "kid duty" in the same sentence. "Here, Piece. This scoop is specially made, so catching goldfish should be a cinch." While Komachi was debating how to reply, Urumi handed Clownpiece a paper scoop, and they started playing happily without her. Komachi just smiled to herself. She was content to watch.

Bright Sparklers

The Focus Shot of Komachi Onozuka from the world obsessed with escaping the heat (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with cool sparklers. "Oh, Miss Komachi...! Working hard, I see..." With a tired cluck, Kutaka, the god of chickens, called out to Komachi as she and Clownpiece passed by a food stall. Kutaka was also working, but she had popped out to get some dinner. "I heard rumors about a black market chicken trade, so I thought I'd take a look while I'm out... but I found chicks, not chickens. Yeah, I'm wearing my yukata. I wanted to enjoy the festival atmosphere, if only for a moment. Hahaha..." Kutaka was laughing, but her heart obviously wasn't in it. That's when Komachi noticed the blue chick in her hands. "I can't take this little one with me back to work, so would it be OK if I left him with you, Miss Komachi...? If possible, it would be great if you could look after him until he grows old..." "That's a big responsibility..." replied Komachi, noncommittally. "I'm gonna head back to work after I'm finished here. I have to save these chicks that are being thoughtlessly sold and given away as prizes. If only I could get them to come to my stand, where I can give them a proper home with people who will definitely take care of them. Speaking of, I have to check back there to see if they're doing OK without me..." "Right, well, take care of yourself..." Kutaka's eyes glazed over, and she continued talking to herself long after Komachi and Clownpiece had left.

Spirit Sign: Massive Sanzu Goldfish Spirit

A Spell Card of Komachi Onozuka from the world obsessed with escaping the heat (a Touhou LW original). She cools off by watching massive goldfish anima swim through the sky. "Oh, it's the Sanzu River Ferrywoman. Have you seen Youmu anywhere?" The next person Komachi and Clownpiece bumped into was Yuyuko, the ghost princess of the Netherworld, dressed in a yukata. Yuyuko claimed to be searching for someone, but it didn't escape their notice that she seemed a lot more focused on all the festival food she was happily munching away on. Seeing Clownpiece's gaze, she gave her one of the many candy apples she was holding. In an excellent display of good manners, Clownpiece bowed her head and said thank you, causing her cute twintails to bob up and down. "Wow, did you get your hair done, little fairy? I love it! I think I'll have to do up Youmu's hair in the same style!" It took all of Komachi's willpower to stop herself from pointing out the obvious flaw in Yuyuko's plan. Youmu's hair was way too short.

Death Song: Sparklers Guiding the Dead

A Spell Card of Komachi Onozuka from the world obsessed with escaping the heat (a Touhou LW original). She cools off by watching big sparklers sparkle. "Miss Komachi! Have you seen Lady Zanmu?!" It seems everyone was at the festival, even Hisami, the guide of Hell! Komachi's first thought was that Hisami must have the day off, but perhaps due to her wealth of experience in the matter, it didn't take her long to realize she was just playing hooky. Zanmu is an oni of Hell, and Hisami always follows her around, acting as her secretary, even though they work in different jurisdictions. Instead of trying to hide the fact that she was skipping work, Hisami went all out and dressed up in a fancy yukata, probably as an attempt to draw Zanmu's attention. Komachi had heard that Zanmu was on a hot spring vacation with Eiki and Hecatia, but this was top secret information. She was explicitly told not to tell Hisami about it. "Oh, what is a Hell fairy doing here? Hmm, who knows when Lady Zanmu might be watching? I should show her that I'm good with children. Here, have this mask. I bought it to do a bit of stalking." Komachi wisely pretended not to hear her last sentence.

Shinigami Komachi's Higan Retour

The Last Word of Komachi Onozuka from the world obsessed with escaping the heat (a Touhou LW original). She forgets about work and floats atop the Sanzu River to cool off. "Look, Piece. Sanzu River is famous for its big fireworks." Komachi's ferry had the perfect seats to watch the fireworks show. Being far from the crowds and surrounded by water made it nice and cool. Clownpiece was fully engrossed in the show. Her eyes sparkled as the fireworks illuminated her face in a rainbow of colors. Komachi was proud that she could bring joy to such an innocent soul. It felt good to be relied on like this. She knew she could be a bit lazy, but this experience made her realize that people rely on her to ferry souls, too. She even briefly considered starting on time and not taking extra-long breaks when she resumed her usual duties... "Now, what should we do next, Piece? I'll take you wherever you want."
