Character Information

Temperament: Gekkoukan
Gekkoukan (a Touhou LW original) refers to a Moon ring or Moon halo. This is an apt temperament for Keine, who edits Gensokyo's history on nights of the Full Moon. Keine is endowed with Earth Phase, since she accepts and creates history, and Moon Essence, because she has a total awareness of Gensokyo's history when she edits. The encompassing and regenerative Earth Phase resists Fire Phase, because fire produces earth, but it is weak to Wood Phase, because wood parts earth. The cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence resists the alluring and arrogant Sun Essence, but it is weak to the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of creating history
Editing history is Keine Kamishirasawa's ability as a were-hakutaku. In her human form, she is capable of "eating" history, whereas in her hakutaku form, she is capable of "creating" history. Keine has two forms, and when she changes form, her ability also changes. However, both her abilities complement each other, so they can basically be interpreted as one ability. Once per month, on the night of the Full Moon, Keine adopts her hakutaku form and edits Gensokyo's history. History is not a true-to-life record of past events, but merely a modern-day interpretation of the past. In fact, a 100% accurate and unbiased record of the past cannot exist. Even if you use scientific methods, creating an exact replication of the past is impossible. This can most easily be seen by how artist renditions of dinosaurs change whenever the leading scientific theory is revised. We live our lives in the present, believing our experiences to be the one true reality, but as soon as these experiences become the past, they change from reality to memory. Memories can only contain imperfect copies of reality because the universe is made up of more information than can ever be stored within an individual's mind. Even if you put every mind together, there wouldn't be enough storage. That's why history is not stored in memories as exact records, but as interpretations of the past that smartly compact the information. Hieda no Akyuu once said that countless truths exist within the infinite universe. This also applies to how interpretations of history can create infinite patterns. When you read history in textbooks, it probably feels like a story set in the distant past, but that's only because you live in a small, isolated bubble of a world. For those who accept this history as one of the many truths, it IS the literal past because there are no other ways to learn about the past.

Attacks

Emergency Burial

Keine Kamishirasawa's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). She alleviates excessive memories in this attack. Protecting history means teaching history to the humans of today. However, history contains some truths that people don't want to accept. The mark of a good teacher is whether they can explain these truths in a way their students can understand.

Sacred Treasure Excavation

Keine Kamishirasawa's Focus Shot (a Touhou LW original). She deciphers history from tools in this attack. Some history isn't found in books. Sometimes it isn't even recorded with words or letters. Humans have been recording history long before the invention of language. However, ancient things are easily broken, so they must be excavated and examined with the utmost care. That's one of the reasons why researching ruins and artifacts takes so much time.

Reincarnation: Ichijou Returning Bridge

Keine Kamishirasawa's Spell Card. She enacts a complete return in this attack. One of the most interesting things about how Keine edits history is that the past she erases returns each Full Moon when she edits history again. Where does she hide it? Is there an archive of all the past events she erased hidden somewhere in the far reaches of the cosmos? Regardless, it's undeniable that a large amount of information―perhaps even a whole universe's worth―gathers around Keine on nights when she edits history.

Future & Past: History of Open Fabrication -Current History-

Keine Kamishirasawa's Spell Card (a Touhou LW original). She creates history and the future in this attack. It could be argued that everything that exists is history. Humans lack the sensibilities, insight, and mental fortitude to perceive reality as it is. They must soften the blow by interpreting everything through a filter of imparted knowledge. In other words, they are always deluding themselves to some degree. This weakness fuels the imagination and lets humans envision what the distant future might look like. This wouldn't have been possible if humans were stronger.

Total Purification

Keine Kamishirasawa's Last Word. She reconstructs the world in this attack. Gensokyo could be considered a land that has been totally purified. Despite having nothing, it has everything. The purification that occurs when history is edited creates hope for the future by directing how others should interpret the past. It's likely that Keine works so hard, teaching children and editing Gensokyo's history every Full Moon, because she wants to foster this hope. If history that has been forgotten in the outside world gathers in Gensokyo, then perhaps Keine is the only one who can purify it from the sins of humanity and create a hopeful future.
