Character Information

Temperament: Amanogawa
Amanogawa (a Touhou LW original) refers to the Milky Way, the band of stars that shines across the night sky. This is a fitting temperament for Chimi, an unidentified youkai. Her temperament is just as unidentifiable as she is, and it could change at any time. She is strong against rivers (Water Phase) and forests (Wood Phase), both things the land itself creates and nurtures, and against the sky (Metal Phase), simply because it has nothing to do with her. She is weak to the Lunar Facility (Moon Essence) and the light of civilization (Fire Phase), because she knows nothing about either, and the land (Earth Phase) because her fate is bound to it.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of manipulating forest qi
The ability of Chimi Houjuu, an ancient youkai who conceals herself deep within untouched nature. There are beings that can only survive in places untouched by humans—delicate aquatic insects that need pristine water, small, fragile flowers, and ancient youkai who've kept their original form since time immemorial. Gods, youkai, fairies, spirits—none of them are recognized for what they are until someone names them. A name marks the boundary of what a thing is understood to be. However, long before names existed, one great spirit pervaded the whole of nature. Just as a body needs a spirit to truly be alive, living nature carries a spirit of its own too. That spirit is the breath of life itself, present everywhere in the depths of the forest, along shores, within bare rocks. Humans could feel the presence of that spirit within nature, something capable of both blessing and harming them. Some call this an all-encompassing god—the same idea behind pantheism, the belief that god and nature are one and the same. Forest fairies, spring spirits, mountain gods... altogether, they're known as the Yaoyorozu no Kami in Japan. And the people living within that nature came to be seen as youkai too. They were the unruly ones, who refused to follow the new religions and be governed. They chose to live alongside the old gods rather than join the encroaching tide of urban, material civilization. Over time, they came to be known by many names: oni, tsuchigumo, kuma, emishi, among others. Today, they exist only as names in written records. The Houjuu predate the concept of youkai altogether. For simplicity, we'll call them "ancient youkai." Oni seem to fit that same label just as well. Was Chimi Houjuu one of the unrecorded people who lived within nature? Or was she the divine being they worshipped instead? Perhaps neither. Perhaps both. All that can be said for certain is that beings like her were known as "chimi," a Japanese term for mountain spirits. Chimi Houjuu is an ancient spirit that lurks in the mountains and forests, and shares traits with Nue Houjuu, presumably another member of the same Houjuu genus. Both are unidentified. Both are chimeras. And both chimi and nue (the species) have been sighted taking many different animal forms from tigers to wild boars. Could Chimi be an alien who crash-landed on Earth and went feral? ...No, that can't be right. There might be a Lunar Capital facility in the sanctuary, but that doesn't prove anything.

Attacks

Ancient Impurity-Devouring Youkai

The Spread Shot of Chimi Houjuu (a Touhou LW original). She stays hidden and isolates her target in this attack. There is a forest within the Yamanba Sanctuary. There are many places in Gensokyo where no humans tread, but this forest is something else entirely―it's wild and untouched as if it's from a time before history. This is partly because the yamanba keep outsiders at bay, but mostly because of the Lunar Capital's facility. It has an aura of preservation, turning the entire area into a living fossil. But whatever's inside that facility is probably even older...

Ancient Sudama

The Focus Shot of Chimi Houjuu (a Touhou LW original). She channels power older than the very concept of youkai. Chimi Houjuu knew something even the yamanba didn't—that the sanctuary's barrier had activated once before, long before the yamanba ever made that forest their home. Chimi had already been living there by then, and the Lunar Capital's facility, the one known as the "altar," had already been built. In a place this untouched by impurity, time itself begins to lose meaning, and that's exactly why the sanctuary's forest has never aged past its ancient, primeval state.

Bewitching Sign: Qi of an Unruly Swamp

A Spell Card of Chimi Houjuu. She unleashes an unknown attack while hiding in a swamp. As it turns out, Chimi Houjuu is the one who created the dousojin Nareko Michigami, which suggests she has a habit of making things like that. Dousojin are an ancient type of deity, with strong ties to Sai no Kami and jizou. Because they're so old, their role has expanded widely over time, and their true origin is still debated. Going back to the original meaning of the word, dousojin may have started out as nothing more than large stones once used as road markers or warning signs, revealing a shared origin between tools and gods.

Bewitching Sign: Qi of a Restless Forest

A Spell Card of Chimi Houjuu. She unleashes an unknown attack while hiding in the forest. A youkai making a dousojin isn't so strange when you think about it. It's no different from how people once crafted their own tools in prehistoric times. Kappa in Gensokyo, for instance, are known to worship a water god tied to Yamata no Orochi, so it wouldn't be surprising for youkai to have belief systems entirely different from human ones. That same god was depicted as an octopus, even though its true form was never confirmed. An unidentified god that looks like an octopus... makes you wonder whether unidentified youkai might have come from outer space.

Forest No One Can Explore

The Last Word of Chimi Houjuu (a Touhou LW original). She's wherever nobody is, and never where somebody is. Human history is, in many ways, a history of uncovering secrets—taking what once couldn't be controlled and making it controllable, taking what once couldn't be predicted and making it predictable. That pursuit is what has kept humanity safe, let it grow, and made human life richer. But not everything survived that process. The creatures and cultures lined up behind glass in museums are gone for good. They'll never come back, no matter how well they're preserved. Which is exactly why humans must spend time with the living world now, before it's just another specimen in a case.
