The temperament of Yukari Yakumo, the 50th remnant of the plan (a Touhou LW original). The details of her temperament are shrouded in mystery. - Strong against Star Essence. The books bibliophiles read are like the stars strewn through the night of space and time. - Weak to Moon Essence. It is hard to read by the light of the Moon. - Strong against Wood Phase. Modern-day books are made out of plant fiber. - Weak to Earth Phase. Data storage media erode over time. Intelligent beings love to read because that is the only way to increase the density of their experiences within a limited lifespan. In the past, farming was developed to provide a means of attaining necessary nutrition, but nowadays, it's done on a completely different scale. Those who no longer worry about getting enough food to live have turned to a different kind of meal―information. They efficiently consume personal exploits, unusual happenings, unfamiliar stories, and unexpected plot twists, starting with whatever's in short supply. In an information-fueled society, battles of bullets are like the golden standard of rich culinary experiences. There is a whole book written about this.
The ability of Yukari Yakumo, the 50th remnant of the plan (a Touhou LW original). The details of her ability are shrouded in mystery. The following is a report written by a youkai who likes to read books at Kourindou. The tengu publish many products, from newspapers written by individual crow tengu to books and magazines produced by Great Tengu companies. They even produce highly entertaining comics. Speaking of comics, the mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion and her gatekeeper are big fans. Their library probably has quite a few tengu comic books on the shelves in addition to all the magic books. Magic books, of which demon books are a subset, are a rare commodity at the rental book shop Suzunaan. They used to have a magical Night Parade scroll, but it seems the boss of the youkai tanuki has hidden it somewhere, along with a number of demon books she took from the shop. When you think of magic books, you probably think of magicians, but they like normal books, too. The puppeteer magician actually writes her own storybooks about dolls. However, the most renowned author in Gensokyo has to be Agatha Chris Q. On a completely unrelated note, the Hieda family's library houses a treasure trove of scrolls and documents pertaining to the origins and history of Gensokyo. The information that can be found within the Gensokyo Chronicle is merely a single drop in the ocean compared to that library, especially if you consider all the dubious documents that might include false information. (Gensokyo is a melting pot of unexplainable people, events, and phenomena, so there is quite a lot of that.) This library might also contain copies―or perhaps even the original manuscripts―of the Gensokyo Records. Compiling these records was the duty of Hakurei Shrine, but they have all but been lost to time now. With culture comes all kinds of records. Books and other written works are the remains of cultures that once lived. Yuyuko's library holds many records of great historical value, and Hell's Ministry of Right and Wrong also compiles records. It's like a reflection of this world where life can be found anywhere, and spirits dwell in everything. ...That's what the youkai in front of me said to herself as she looked down at the book titled Kourindou Catalog in her hand. One late afternoon, I decided to visit Kourindou, my usual haunt, in search of a book to read. That's when I met her. I couldn't believe my eyes. She was familiar to me, of course. Even a nameless youkai like me knows of the Greater Youkai, Yukari Yakumo. She's one of the Sages who created Gensokyo. And it's not like it was all that strange for her to be here. She often appears in seemingly random places without warning, and I knew she sometimes visits Kourindou. I was surprised because she was shorter than the Yukari I know. Yukari's meant to be tall. Her height, coupled with her aura of shadiness and mystery, is what makes her so intimidating. However, the Yukari before me was no taller than the Hakurei shrine maiden. And the voice I heard when she was talking to herself wasn't as deep as I remember. She sounded more like a child. It isn't that difficult for a youkai to change their form or voice... but why would Yukari choose to look like this? She must have a reason. "Did you know that?" It took me a moment to realize that she was talking to me. She was looking right at me. "Know... what?" "You love books, don't you? So I'm assuming you've come across similar ideas." She completely ignored my question... "Books, written works, contain different types of data." She went on to explain that there are three types: true data, outside data, and false data. Unfortunately, I had never heard of them before. "The words used to define these categories are used in a way that deviates slightly from their original meaning." I was terribly confused. What's the point of using a word to mean something that it doesn't? Wouldn't it be better to just name them something else? "True data refers to our true written history. Events that actually happened. As well as events that people believe to have happened." I've heard before that history is made by that half-beast teacher in the Human Village. It's like a book that she edits. I assume that's the kind of thing she meant when she said, "events that people believe to have happened." "Outside data is history believed to be from the outside world, or data based on that history." I could see why she needed to make that distinction. The outside world belongs to humans, and they don't see things the same way as us youkai. They probably interpret history differently from us. Not to mention that outside-world ideas and stories that come to Gensokyo are either known to be incorrect or are no longer thought about there. "And lastly, false data... refers to things that haven't happened." What did she mean by that? Was she talking about novels and the like? There are plenty of fiction books... "I have gathered all kinds of books, documents, and records, but I cannot seem to find any that contain true data." That didn't make any sense to me. There are plenty of books that talk about history. If you went to see the teacher in the village, she'd happily lend you some. There's also the Gensokyo Chronicle. "Say... are you true data?" That's when I realized the mistake I had made. The "true data" she mentioned doesn't exist in a vacuum. It gets mixed up with other data, and when you think you've found it, it disappears. Youkai and humans are basically like walking books... But she also said that she still hadn't found any true data while looking directly at me... I wanted to ask what she meant, but the words caught in my throat. When I looked up, she was no longer there. [The report ends here.] Wordsmith No. 50 She looks like Yukari Yakumo, acts like Yukari Yakumo, and thus, she is Yukari Yakumo. It seems that this Yukari has already lost all knowledge of the original being known as Wordsmith. However, it's possible that Wordsmith still exists inside her, and if someone has the power to see hidden things or if Wordsmith wants to be found by that person, they might be able to perceive this Yukari's true identity. Either way, this Yukari is not Wordsmith. She's more like a husk or shell that Wordsmith discarded. However, that's not to mean it's one hundred percent wrong to identify her as Wordsmith. When identifying something, you must look at trace fossils and supporting evidence. Speaking of fossils, fossilized bones generally aren't actually bones; they have been chemically altered or replaced with other materials over time while maintaining the same features and structure. This Yukari is similar. Another way to think about this is with the Apollo Lunar Module. The ascent stage of the module left the Moon with the astronauts on board, but the descent stage remains on the Moon to this day. Without a doubt, there was a time when this Yukari was Wordsmith. ??? I'm gonna try to explain this individual using my Star System interpretation of the cosmos. It's pretty complicated, so I left some notes. This Yukari Yakumo with the code L50ws can coexist with a Yukari that has the code L50. She can also coexist with the being tentatively known as Wordsmith, who has an as-yet-unknown code and closely resembles Yukari. In other words, when viewed in five-dimensional spacetime, Yukari (L50ws), Yukari (L50), and Wordsmith are all distinct individuals. What makes it tricky is that different versions of the same person with the same name in different parallel worlds can also be called distinct. There are a bunch of different ways to describe how individuals can be different when viewed in five-dimensional spacetime, and I should try to label 'em, but that's a task for another time. Anyway, I'm just gonna list what I've learned so far. - Wordsmith visited the L50 universe cluster (i.e., universes like L50m, L50dim, and L50aug) as Yukari (L50ws). - Wordsmith shed the identity of Yukari (L50ws), leaving her in this universe, and then departed to a different universe. This had already happened by the time I first observed Yukari (L50ws). - Yukari (L50) exists as a native of this universe cluster, and she probably helped Wordsmith somehow during her visit since there's no way she'd just allow Wordsmith to do whatever she pleased. Yeah, I think that's about it. You can thank me later.
The Spread Shot of Yukari Yakumo, the 50th remnant of the plan (a Touhou LW original). The Youkai Sage scrutinizes the Gensokyo Chronicle in this attack. Starting with the first Child of Miare, Hieda no Aichi, the Hieda family has continued to compile and preserve the Gensokyo Chronicle for over a thousand years. Upon death, the Child of Miare serves as the Yama's assistant until they reincarnate five to seven generations later in an event known as the Miracle of Miare. The ninth Child of Miare claims that the only memories they inherit from their past lives are a few snippets about the Gensokyo Chronicle, but that doesn't seem to match with her evident wealth of knowledge. It's quite possible that the memories of Gensokyo are not kept within books or scrolls like the Gensokyo Chronicle but within the Children of Miare themselves. Memories are power and, at times, a privilege. That's why Yukari Yakumo takes special care to read over the Gensokyo Chronicle before a new edition is published. She's always done this ever since the first edition. The truth of Gensokyo is always filtered through Yukari, the Youkai Sage, and the memories of Gensokyo must reflect that.
The Focus Shot of Yukari Yakumo, the 50th remnant of the plan (a Touhou LW original). The Youkai Sage scrutinizes the Bill for the Naming of Duels in this attack. The Spell Card Rules are such an integral part of life in Gensokyo that it's hard to imagine what it must have been like before they existed. Were the duels back then still games that involved bullets, or were they all-out battles to the death where the strong exploited the weak? Apparently, there was another set of rules for duels, but they didn't catch on. This just goes to show how masterfully the Hakurei shrine maiden crafted the Spell Card Rules. However, there are rumors that the rules were actually determined not by the shrine maiden but by a youkai and that they function like a youkai contract...
A Spell Card of Yukari Yakumo, the 50th remnant of the plan (a Touhou LW original). She rereads her own literary work in this attack. Remilia Scarlet's Scarlet Mist Incident would never have happened without the Vampire Incident, which necessitated the implementation of the Spell Card Rules. However, it was also dependent on the Youkai Expansion Project that began over five hundred years ago. This project created the barrier between reality and fantasy―a mechanism that automatically draws things that have all but been forgotten in the outside world to Gensokyo. Without it, the Scarlet Devil Mansion would never have appeared in Gensokyo. It all went according to Yukari Yakumo's plan! That said, while the Youkai Expansion Project was ultimately a success, it has also caused an imbalance of power between youkai and humans. Unfortunately, a detailed copy of this text has yet to be found.
A Spell Card of Yukari Yakumo, the 50th remnant of the plan (a Touhou LW original). She rereads her own literary work in this attack. While most people have heard of the Eternal Night Incident, they do not realize that it was caused by the Lunarians of Eientei conjuring a fake full Moon. It started with an ancient transgression that led to the Brain of the Moon and the lunar princess's audacious flight from the Moon and ended with an incident that encompassed all of Gensokyo. In the outside world, humans used science to reach the Moon, and way before that, the youkai of Gensokyo attempted an invasion of the Moon, sparking the first Lunar-Genso war. Despite this, the Lunarians have always believed that they are the true rulers of Earth. They claim to control humans by inciting conflict over valuable treasures, like the Jeweled Branch of Hourai, which they drop down to Earth. They also claim to have created youkai by bathing the Earth in the Moon's magic. But who knows if that's true? Especially since the Lunarians originally came from Earth. Unfortunately, a detailed copy of this text has yet to be found.
The Last Word of Yukari Yakumo, the 50th remnant of the plan (a Touhou LW original). She rereads her own literary work in this attack. The Spring Snow Incident was caused by a ghost princess gathering spring in the Netherworld. Having found an old scroll in her Hakugyokurou library that spoke of a girl called the Daughter of Fujimi sleeping beneath the Saigyou Ayakashi, a youkai cherry blossom tree, she decided to try and revive her by filling the tree with the power of spring. The power of spring is the power of rebirth, so she was sure it would work. Unfortunately, she had forgotten that she was, in fact, the Daughter of Fujimi. If a ghost uncovers their remains and pays the proper respects, they will pass on to the next life. However, since her remains have been resting there for over a thousand years, they were unlikely to have endured the revival process without crumbling to dust. If that happened, she would not pass on. Instead, her soul would cease to exist. It might have also destroyed the Netherworld along with the cycle of reincarnation that it is a part of. The ghost has completely forgotten her former life. She no longer remembers how the tree's siren song lured many to their death and how she sacrificed herself to stop it. The only one who remembers is Yukari Yakumo. Unfortunately, a detailed copy of this text has yet to be found.
