Character Information

Temperament: Hanare-gasa

Hanare-gasa (a Touhou LW original) refers to cap clouds that form above the summit of mountains. This is the temperament of Byakuren, who has endured endless cycles of death and rebirth in search of a way to combat the Lost Word Incident. After countless years of training in Makai, Byakuren attained the Sun's radiance, which never dims, not even in the shadow of the Moon. The formless and passionate Fire Phase resists Wood Phase, because wood feeds fire, but it is weak to Water Phase, because water dampens fire. The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence. Byakuren's temperament, however, has overcome its weakness to Moon Essence.

Ability/Backstory: Capable of using magic (specializing in increasing physical ability) (Lost)

The ability of Byakuren Hijiri, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). Byakuren completely lost this ability due to a Lost Word. She is currently regaining it little by little, though not through restoring or replicating her old ability, but with a newly constructed original ability that formed a core to build upon. She has continued to travel across worlds to try and end the Lost Word Incident. Perhaps few abilities are as deeply tied to the user's thoughts and beliefs as Byakuren's. As such, revealing the full scope of her ability risks exposing her flaws, foolishness, and regrets. After all, youth restoration and agelessness are forms of magic that enhance physical capabilities. Byakuren's younger brother, Myouren, was a great monk, and his death struck fear into her heart. For those unfamiliar with Buddha's teachings, "shiku" is one of the Four Sufferings and refers to the suffering of death. Byakuren could not overcome this form of suffering through the teachings of Buddha, and none felt the sting of her failure more keenly than she did. She knew it meant she was a failure of a Buddhist monk. She also knew that her use of magic and her self-serving alliances with youkai to sustain that magic were acts of heresy. In a way, being denounced by humans and sealed away in Makai may have been a relief. So, after countless years had passed, her disciples coming to free her from Makai undoubtedly felt like salvation. Byakuren's existence so far has been wrought with kleshas―negative mental states that bring about suffering. This includes the times she betrayed herself and her salvation at the hands of her disciples. Within the microscopic world sealed off by the Lost Word, she was destined to live alongside her kleshas forever. The only one capable of saving her was her brother, but surely there was no way he could ever appear before her. Shigi What was once the Flying Storehouse, the Palanquin Ship, and Myouren Temple has now transformed into something entirely new. It no longer has a physical form and is instead the embodiment of "the place Byakuren and her disciples called home." Given Myouren Temple's name and the fact its structure originated as the Flying Storehouse, it's clear it has some connection to Myouren, Byakuren's younger brother, but the details remain unclear. As for Shigi, while its name comes from a geographical location in the outside world, its connection to Byakuren is uncertain and a source of much speculation. It has been suggested that its name may actually be pronounced "Shinki," not "Shigi," but that, too, is uncertain.

Attacks

Agonizing Samsara

The Spread Shot of Byakuren Hijiri, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She takes inspiration from her pestilence god disciple in this attack. At first glance, a pestilence god and Buddhism might seem like an odd combination. Surprisingly, however, their origins share certain commonalities. Why not let a pestilence god become a deity who protects Buddhism? Given this one's ferocious fists, Byakuren must be glad to have her as a disciple.

Secret Paramita

The Focus Shot of Byakuren Hijiri, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She takes inspiration from her nue youkai and bake-danuki disciples in this attack. These two unidentifiable youkai seem perfectly suited to perching on the high beams of the youkai temple. It's possible that they aren't in training and just happen to spend their time there, though. The legendary nue youkai stays because she feels indebted to the temple's head priest while the bake-danuki simply does so because temple-life suits her. However, both are greater youkai, so when the time comes, they will (probably) prove to be mighty allies.

Myouren Temple: Pain of Separation's New Disciples

A Spell Card of Byakuren Hijiri, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She takes inspiration from her new disciples in this attack. Something remarkable about Myouren Temple is how it continues to gain youkai disciples over time. Welcoming newcomers serves as proof that the temple remains steadfast in its mission to save youkai. Even if a potential disciple seems incompatible with Buddha's teachings, the temple welcomes them with open arms. Simply having them act as a student of Buddhism is a good enough starting point.

Myouren Temple: Pain of Unfulfilled Desires' Top Disciples

A Spell Card of Byakuren Hijiri, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She takes inspiration from her veteran disciples in this attack. Even after all those years, they never forgot Byakuren Hijiri. They escaped the Underworld and attempted to break the Makai seal, hoping to set her free. Youkai tend to be individualistic creatures, so for these youkai to have demonstrated such fierce loyalty and cooperation over an extended period is truly remarkable. That only goes to show just how deeply they cared for Byakuren.

Shigi - Lotus Flower of Life

The Last Word of Byakuren Hijiri, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). According to outside world legends, it was the great Prince Shoutoku who spread the faith of Bishamonten. Myouren inherited this faith, maintained it with fervor, cultivated great virtue, and aided in the salvation of countless people. His deeds were genuine, and so it comes as no surprise that he is revered as a saint in the outside world. The original intent behind spreading Buddhist teachings is irrelevant. What matters is that Myouren undoubtedly carried forward the bright future Prince Shoutoku envisioned. Salvation is something far beyond human comprehension.
