Character Information

Temperament: Hourai Reiki
Hourai Reiki (a Touhou LW original) refers to a mirage. This is the temperament of Kokoro, who seeks to end the Lost Word Incident from the space within her heart forged by emotions. The temperament of wings (Metal Phase) has been added to her original temperament (Earth Phase and Star Essence). The encompassing and regenerative Earth Phase resists Fire Phase, because fire produces earth, but it is weak to Wood Phase, because wood parts earth. The diverse and uncooperative Star Essence resists the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence, but it is weak to the charming and arrogant Sun Essence. The cold and silent Metal Phase resists Earth Phase, because earth bears metal, but it is weak to Fire Phase, because fire refines metal. The combination of Metal Phase and Earth Phase cancels out any resistance or weakness to Fire Phase.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of manipulating emotions (Lost)
The ability of Hata no Kokoro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). Kokoro completely lost this ability due to a Lost Word. She is currently regaining it little by little, though not through restoring or replicating her old ability, but with a newly constructed original ability that formed a core to build upon. She has continued to travel across worlds to try and end the Lost Word Incident. What is the connection of Hata no Kokoro, a tsukumogami, to humans? Tsukumogami begin as mere tools, inanimate objects whose existence is defined by its use. This remains true even after they become tsukumogami. When a tool is abandoned instead of being destroyed as part of a ritual offering, it may begin to harbor resentment. This is what fuels its transformation into a tsukumogami youkai. You can imagine the nerves and blood vessels of a tsukumogami as circuits through which the magical energy of their former owner once flowed. Put simply, the tool remains forever bound to its owner. However, Kokoro doesn't appear to be a tsukumogami born from resentment. No official records in the true data clearly describe her origin. For now, it remains a mystery. The origins of menreiki (tsukumogami composed of 66 masks) are closely tied to Prince Shoutoku and Hata no Kawakatsu. This makes them special among the many varieties of tsukumogami, even more so than biwa-bokuboku and koto-furunushi. Had these masks continued to exist in the outside world, they would undoubtedly have been designated national treasures. However, the tale of the 66 masks exchanged between the Prince and Kawakatsu may be no more than legend, and it's possible the masks were fictional. In that sense, it may be more myth than legend―a tale imagined to explain the origins of the many Noh theater masks. If so, it could be seen as an attempt to trace the evolution of emotional expression. The fictional masks may have been seen as the source of emotional expression itself, and it was them that gave rise to menreiki, including Hata no Kokoro. The notion that Prince Shoutoku and Hata no Kawakatsu are Toyosatomimi no Miko and Okina Matara originates from outside world texts, with no evidence in the true data. They could be entirely different individuals. Alternatively, the prince and Kawakatsu might never have existed at all. Menreiki can be seen as fictional masks that have been labeled the origin of human emotion (see: purification mechanism). It is at once idealism and panpsychism. And taken to its extreme, it's solipsism. Emotions are internal phenomena triggered by sensory input. You could argue that they are the foundation of all human perception. The inner and outer worlds of a person exist in a one-to-one correspondence. But if you account for the uncertainty principle, the boundary between them dissolves. Thus, manipulating emotion is indistinguishable from interacting with the world. And so, when Kokoro studied the emotions of others and learned to express her own, she was essentially travelling the world. Kokoro was once nothing more than a tool. Losing her heart and returning to nothingness shouldn't have scared her. But it did. She had learned how to feel fear... and hope. The Dawn Mask Kokoro is given strength by all human emotions, represented by her 66 masks. Emotions are not confined to a person's inner world. They are wordless feelings, innumerable by nature, that spawn in response to every sight and thought. With 66 masks, combining any two yields 2,145 possible forms. Combine three, and you have 45,760 combinations. If you allow duplicates of the same mask and keep combining, then before long, you'll surpass the Eddington number. All living beings have emotions. And so, there is no one in the universe whose strength Kokoro can't access.

Attacks

Mask of Flawless Beauty

The Spread Shot of Hata no Kokoro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She uses multiple masks at once. Long ago, before the Asuka period, Nigihayahi descended from the heavens and arrived in a land known as Takerugamine. However, there's a theory that the true reading of this land's kanji is actually Ikarugamine. Perhaps in honor of that theory, Takerugamine was later renamed to Ikaruga.

Mask of Audacity

The Focus Shot of Hata no Kokoro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She uses a thick, hard mask in this attack. The ikaruga bird is also known as the bird of three lights because its call sounds like "tsuki-hi-hoshi," meaning Moon, Sun, and star in Japanese. Despite being written with the kanji for mottled dove, it isn't actually part of the pigeon family. Its scientific name is eophona personata, which means masked voice of the dawn.

66 Masks: Masks for Studying Emotions

A Spell Card of Hata no Kokoro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She studies human emotions and trains to express her own. The Tokusa no Kandakara, the ten divine treasures granted to Nigihayahi by the other Amatsukami, didn't include any masks. Yet they were clearly objects meant for performing ritualistic, magical rites. With them, dances could be performed, which had the enviable power to bring the dead back to life. To channel the power of the gods through one's body, it was essential to wear a mask. It was far too difficult to play a god with your regular face. After all, possession often begins with imitation.

66 Masks: Mask for the Grand Incident Stage

A Spell Card of Hata no Kokoro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She expresses her own emotions. And so, the very first mask was created. It wasn't intended to be a crude representation of a god. Rather, it was made to allow the god's face to manifest behind it, onto the hidden face of the wearer. The mask was an icon, a work of art meant to evoke the face that lies beneath. At the same time, it was also an idol, or "idola." As a face-shaped tool entrusted with channeling divinity, it held special significance.

Dance of the Empty-Hearted Masks - Noh of Darkness -Dawn Mask-

The Last Word of Hata no Kokoro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She imbues this attack with all possible emotions. Calm, unembellished narration can perfectly convey a scene. Whereas overly dramatic performances can feel dishonest and fail to illustrate true emotion. Mocked as a Noh mask, Hata no Kokoro has not yet mastered expressing emotions. But divinity often resides in that which is incomplete. And so Kokoro soars endlessly onward, on the path toward becoming whole. No one is truly devoid of emotion. Not even your enemies. The bullets they fire are their emotions given form. In the end, they fire, dodge... and get hit.
