Character Information

Temperament: Anabatic Wind
Anabatic Wind (a Touhou LW original) refers to the upward current that blows along a mountain slope. This is an apt temperament for Nitori as it reflects her drive to resolve the Lost Word Incident through technology. Nitori is endowed with the temperaments of the kappa (Moon Essence), the yamawaro (Wood Phase), and the Youkai Mountain (Metal Phase). The cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence resists the alluring and arrogant Sun Essence, but it is weak to the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence. The strong and kind Wood Phase resists Water Phase, because water nourishes wood, but it is weak to Metal Phase, because metal carves wood. The cold and silent Metal Phase resists Earth Phase, because earth bears metal, but it is weak to Fire Phase, because fire refines metal.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of manipulating water (Lost)
The Ability of Nitori Kawashiro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). Nitori completely lost this ability due to a Lost Word. She is currently regaining it little by little, though not through restoring or replicating her old ability, but with a newly constructed original ability that formed a core to build upon. She has continued to travel across worlds to try and end the Lost Word Incident. Technological Singularity. Some claim that AI will surpass humanity. Others say it won't. And then, of course, someone always insists it will without a doubt. Conversations like these often make the rounds, but in the end, it's nothing more than a rehash of a doomsday theory with god swapped out for AI. Which is to say, it's dubious at best. Back in the days of the space boom, people said the end would come by UFO invasion. But Nitori Kawashiro knew better. The singularity would come in an entirely different form. The real problem is not technology itself, but the way unresolved issues pile up around those who use it. There's energy shortage, food shortage, overpopulation, racism, global economic problems, environmental problems, and soon enough, even space debris. Will humanity actually set sail across the solar system in a new Age of Exploration, and one day rule the galaxy? Just as humanity once had its Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, will there be a Space Revolution? One that'll awaken the dormant corners of the human mind and unlock some sort of latent power? Hah. Don't be ridiculous. Humanity will only trap itself on Earth. And then perish. ...Or so the occult magazines claimed. For a youkai engineer, such things hardly matter. What matters is the pursuit of technology and the joy of putting it to the test. Humans poured their efforts into cultivating grain, which is technically sugar, to feed themselves and keep their species flourishing. Much of human history is built upon that struggle. But when sugar grew too abundant, it began to harm them. A cruel fate, perhaps, but one that was inevitable from the start. Meanwhile, the youkai were enjoying themselves by fermenting that very sugar. The product of this fermentation is alcohol. It was born from sugar that was left over, forgotten, neglected. In short, both youkai and alcohol are born of surplus. For fear itself springs only from surplus. The desperate have no room for fear. Only when humans began to see themselves as individuals, to seek self-preservation, to form societies, and to gather wealth did fear take root. It came from the possibility of loss. From that moment on, emotions such as surprise, caution, and doubt all carried with them the seed of fear. The kappa are youkai of water. They stand close to both life and death. Land creatures need to drink water to live, yet it carries the ever-present risk of drowning. Life itself was born from water, the body's foremost element is water, and without it, death is certain. Water flows through our body, through our homes, and throughout the world. And in those waters, the kappa have watched every moment of mankind. Although ranked below the oni and even the tengu, the kappa's potential as youkai is far from inferior. Their true strength lies in their knowledge of their environment and their mastery of practical technology. Perhaps only the kappa could be so deeply fascinated by the nature of this world, the place that allows them to exist. Kappa Mattock Nitori's primary weapon, and the ultimate magic tool representing the culmination of her inventions. ...Or so it seems. But in reality, its core is none other than Nitori's own engineer arm. The arm of a kappa is a magic item so highly regarded that even humans rank it among the finest. At its core, it is the collective consciousness of Nitori's fellow kappa, who serve as her underlings, together with the yamawaro who share the same roots. Kappa are among the most well-known of youkai. Underestimate them, and you'll find yourself being dragged down into the watery depths.

Attacks

Kappa Mattock Gun

The Spread Shot of Nitori Kawashiro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She attacks using her treasured inventions. It would be a mistake to think youkai use tools for the same reasons humans do. Human and youkai civilizations stand on entirely different foundations. Humans built a material civilization, while the youkai built a spiritual one. If humans use tools for material advantage, then youkai must be using them for spiritual gain.

Kappa Mattock Mace

The Focus Shot of Nitori Kawashiro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She attacks using her prized inventions. Tales from long ago already tell us that kappa are skilled in handling tools. Many of these stories describe them lending and borrowing tools from humans. Dexterous hands to manipulate tools, the intelligence to understand how to use them, and the good sense to attempt communication with other species. They are, indeed, an oddly humanlike youkai.

Genbu Ravine: Carefree Life by the Stream

A Spell Card of Nitori Kawashiro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with nostalgia for her life by the beautiful river. In spiritual civilizations, tools are more symbolic than practical. For example, hina dolls of the misfortune god don't literally absorb misfortune. Likewise, the white wolf tengu would probably be just as physically strong with or without their weapons. What truly matters is believing that the tool serves a purpose, and that you can make others believe it too.

Genbu Ravine: Familiar Mountain Hierarchy

A Spell Card of Nitori Kawashiro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with memories of the harsh mountain life. Both oni and tengu use tools, but not because they need them to enhance their already great abilities. Instead, it reflects their nature as beings who give more importance to spiritual things. Youkai are, after all, spiritual lifeforms. That makes the kappa, with their fixation on tools and technology, a truly unusual kind of youkai.

Surround Her! Quack, Quax, Quorax!

The Last Word of Nitori Kawashiro, who has almost reached the end (a Touhou LW original). This attack is the culmination of all her technological ingenuity. In a spiritual civilization, tools are not believed to hold power on their own. Rather, their strength lies in the essential bond between the tool and its wielder. Such power has no place in a material civilization. It would simply be labeled as magic there. The kappa are fascinated by humans, but they still see the world through youkai eyes. Just as science in material civilizations is a kind of magic, the magical abilities in spiritual civilizations have rules they must follow. If there were no such rules, anything would be possible. But that's not the case. There are things they can do and things they cannot. Abilities most certainly have limits, and by understanding them, the kappa refine their craft into a system of ingenuity.
