Character Information

Temperament: Tenka
Tenka (a Touhou LW original) refers to flowers that are said to bloom in the heavens, and it is also another word for snow. Perhaps this temperament is related to how Yuyuko loves the flowers that bloom in the land of the dead? Yuyu makes five-ingredient fried rice, resulting in the Five Phases (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) canceling each other out. She is imbued with Star Essence due to her diverse and free style of cooking. The diverse and uncooperative Star Essence resists the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence, but it is weak to the charming and arrogant Sun Essence.
Ability/Backstory: Capable of manipulating death?
The ability of Yuyuko Saigyouji (R2) from Memory Fragment 5 (a Touhou LW original). The path that this Yuyuko has walked is so unusual that it is still a mystery how exactly she differs from other Yuyukos. This Yuyuko does not possess agency. She exists and acts solely in accordance with the fate of Youmu Konpaku (R8), to whom she is bound. But that is not a sad thing. For Youmu to save Yuyuko, it was necessary to continually rewrite the world, no matter how prolonged the suffering. And to make that possible, Youmu had to take full responsibility for Yuyuko. She even had to bear her fate. In other words, the Yuyuko of this world is less a character and more akin to background art or annotation text. Given that context, you could say the fantasy restaurant Hakugyokurou is simply an extension of her being. When did she begin cooking? Why does she do it? How does she usually spend her time while preparing meals? Yuyuko herself doesn't think too much about it. After all, she's always been forgetful. If she ever had time to worry about her own sense of being, she'd rather spend it cooking. The following is an excerpt of a report about a mysterious restaurant that was recorded in a Dazzle. "Welcome to Hakugyokurou, the fantasy restaurant." The guest was stunned by the young girl who greeted them, too young to be called a proprietress. But it wasn't simply her strange attire, nor her unearthly presence. The guest's bewilderment stemmed from the fact that they were supposed to be heading to the island for a duel. The fantasy restaurant Hakugyokurou exists nowhere in the world of the living, and so, can appear anywhere in it. It appears in places no one pays attention to. High up a steep mountain, in a forgotten back alley of town, at the edge of a cape no one visits. Or perhaps on a lone island beyond the sea. In the mountains, you might find the home of a yamanba, Mayohiga, a fox's manor, or a sparrow's inn. But at sea, it could be Tokoyo no Kuni, the Dragon Palace, or Onigashima. In any case, a place this isolated from the world shouldn't be home to such a refined establishment. The sky was dim, and a strange aura hung in the air. Yet even in old folktales, these mysterious places often serve food to visitors. (Except for Onigashima.) Perhaps treating visitors to a meal is a kind of universal custom. Maybe these places appear in stories because they once existed in our world? "Is everything to your liking?" Despite the fancy surroundings, the girl's smile was innocent and childlike, neither of which are bad things. After all, a smile without malice is one of the most disarming things in the world. But still, the guest had no time for this. They finally came back to their senses. "Are you leaving already? There's still plenty of food to come, you know?" The guest had already eaten more than enough, but somehow, the meal wasn't over! But what was even more surprising was realizing how much they'd let themselves relax. All this time, they'd believed themselves impervious to outside influence. They devoted their life to the art of the blade, longing to fight without flaw. How could their guard have been lowered so easily? Maybe that was the power of food. The temple monk, the hidden-dagger wielder, the warrior from Ganryuu whom the guest had sworn to duel, and all the others... Their jaws would surely drop if they saw the guest now. "Lady Yuyuko. It's nearly time for my battle to the death with this guest." "Oh my, is it that late already? Time really does fly." "She must be a swordswoman," thought the guest. "Ah, that's right. I came to this island for a duel. And my opponent... Yes, it's her. No mistake about it." [The report ends here.]

Yuyuko has dedicated herself to cooking, and at the fantasy restaurant Hakugyokurou, she serves up food with passion. She's not creating new dishes, but based on their level of refinement, it's hard to believe she's simply following old recipes. Not to mention, they're utterly scrumptious. Recently, she's been obsessed with Huaxu cuisine, but who knows what she'll try to cook in the future?

Banquet: Chili Shrimp Dream

A Spell Card of Yuyuko Saigyouji (R2) from Memory Fragment 5 (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with what she claims is a Huaxu cuisine appetizer. Huaxu, the Land of Huaxu, Huaxu's Kingdom―these all refer to the same utopia. A land of ultimate equality, where no ruler is needed. It's said those who dwell there are both wise and long-lived. Some say it sounds too good to be true, a fairy tale. Frankly, they have a point.

A Spell Card of Yuyuko Saigyouji (R2) from Memory Fragment 5 (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with what she claims is a Huaxu cuisine main dish. What we eat doesn't just fuel us―it becomes the building blocks that make up our bodies. They say food is the best medicine. Simply by adjusting our diet, we can alter our physical condition. From a different perspective, restricting food is the ultimate form of control. Taking away the freedom to eat is the most powerful form of attack. To protect a culture's cuisine is to protect the culture and its dignity.

Yuyu's Special Huaxu Fried Rice

The Last Word of Yuyuko Saigyouji (R2) from Memory Fragment 5 (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with what she claims is a Huaxu cuisine staple. Yomotsuhegui is the act of eating in the realm of the dead. Doing so famously binds you there, making it impossible to return. But when you think about it, it's quite strange. To the modern mind, a simple question arises: Scientifically, how could eating something prevent you from leaving? In ancient times, people didn't see things that way. Their understanding of the connection between humans and the world wasn't the cold, clinical view science presents today. It was far more raw and intimate. To eat food in the realm of the dead is to accept its nature. Things that share the same nature are drawn to one another. They synchronize. (This is the same reasoning behind the old belief in things like weapon salves.) This force of attraction stops you from leaving. Or rather, robs you of your desire to leave. Cooking is also a ritual that deals in death. And with it, Yuyuko has the power to lead others, beautifully, toward death.
