This was one of the first steps on the path to civilization, followed by many more instances of humans using tools to accomplish what other animals can do but better.

Everyone has felt, at least once, that the grass must be greener somewhere else. Seeing how humans have spent hundreds of thousands of years spreading all across the globe, the instinct to migrate seems to be written into their DNA. This is where the monomyth of the hero's journey likely originated. People also tended to migrate east because it was thought that the lands from whence the Sun rises must be a warmer, more pleasant place to live.

They often appear in stories either as heralds of calamity or protectors against it. It is theorized that tengu could be ancient gods or former humans who have attained supernatural powers by training in the mountains. Some tengu are even worshipped as Shinto gods or protectors of Buddhism. They are not simply hated and feared like most other youkai. However, white wolf tengu have another tie to humans that other tengu lack―the bond between humans and dogs. No animal shares more history with humans or is more loved by them. But they have also been abandoned more times and ill-treated more than any other animal. How would dogs, who have reverted into youkai, survive in a world without humans?
