Tsukumogami of the Future
"It won't be long now, Benben."
"I feel it, too, Yatsuhashi."
The two sisters held hands as they lay on the floor, feeling the power drain out of them. After the intense concert they had just concluded, the silence was almost deafening. After many long years of use, their device bodies had reached their limit. Everything expires eventually. Trying to preserve something, especially things with a physical form, is an effort in futility.
Benben Tsukumo is a biwa tsukumogami, and Yatsuhashi Tsukumo is a koto tsukumogami. However, in this world, they possess special youkai forms that have endured far into the future.
The Magic of Music
"Let's get this concert started!"
With a nod, the two performers started playing, gradually building in intensity. This was their final concert, but instead of an audience, they were watched by cameras, drones, and audio equipment all connected together by the power of their magic.
Tsukumogami need magic to function. The magic imparted to them by their former owner forms the core of their identity. However, most tools are destroyed before they become tsukumogami. Traditionally, people destroy old tools before throwing them away. This acts as a kind of funeral, thanking the tool for its service. Apparently, this tradition can be traced all the way back to the Jomon period (14,000 to 300 BC).
Silk Strings
"Nice, Yatsuhashi. That sounds great."
"Rock on, Benben."
There's no better way to communicate than by sharing music. This concert was the crescendo of their current lives in a string of many. It was a shame that no one else would see it, but they couldn't do anything about that.
They were too weak to perform the spell they learned from Raiko by themselves.
The Reincarnation of All Things
"..."
All things with a form, shape, and structure will inevitably crumble to dust. Some call this the law of impermanence, whereas others call it the law of ever-increasing entropy. Will tsukumogami also pass on when their form decays to nothing? When their magic dissipates into temperament and becomes one with the environment, will they be reborn into something else?
Maybe they will. Some humans wish to experience the same fate in their next life, so it wouldn't be surprising if some tools thought the same way. Raiko's spell is an answer to these prayers.
Somewhere, Sometime, We'll Meet Again
"This is goodbye, Yatsuhashi, but we'll meet again soon."
"Benben. When we're reborn..."
They no longer had the energy to move as they spoke their final words. They've repeated this countless times, but that doesn't mean they weren't scared. Even if it was just for a little while, they were scared of letting go of each other. They were scared of being separated.
But they have a future. They can continue moving forward and compose another song. Their faith in each other was stronger than their fear...
"...let's be sisters again."
