Deep within the Bamboo Forest of the Lost lies a mansion. A place no one visits. A place no one can reach. Yet, somehow, everyone in Gensokyo knows its name: Eientei. Not a day goes by without a new rumor circulating.
They say the garden is overrun with rabbits. They say a pharmacist who knows all things resides there. They say a princess who's grown weary of eternity roams the halls.
All just rumors. Much like the story you're about to read...
It all started with a passing thought.
When you live forever, the seasons blend into one another. But outside, the air had started to warm. The grounds around Eientei were looking greener again. And so the princess thought: Why don't I go outside? There wasn't any deeper meaning to it. Truly. Then, without thinking, she said, "Hey, the Moon looks beautiful tonight, huh?" After all, not pointing it out felt like a waste.
"The Moon looks beautiful tonight." Hearing the princess say that, the earth rabbit couldn't help but agree. Looking up, there hung a full moon―just a little smaller than usual. Another rabbit had mentioned there was a festival going on in the Human Village that night. The earth rabbit hadn't asked any details. Human affairs didn't interest her. Still, something about the word festival and the princess's Moon remark clicked in her mind.
She searched through the bamboo forest. Before long, she found it―still fresh and green. Then, she asked the princess, "Wanna have a moon-viewing party?" After all, with a full moon that beautiful, just standing around and staring at it felt like a waste.
It didn't take long for the pharmacist to notice the princess and the rabbit were up to something. But why all the secrecy? It's not as if anything they did could make her angry. She debated asking to join in, but that felt too far out of character. No doubt it would catch them completely off guard.
But then, another thought struck her. Hadn't there once been a time when little secrets and whispered plans were part of the fun? A part of her still wanted to join in. Normally, she would've suppressed her urge, but not this time.
"Would you mind if I joined you?"
After all, she and the princess were inseparable. And so to be left out on a night like this felt like a waste.
A different rabbit set her medicine box down and let out a quiet sigh. There'd been a festival in the Human Village these past few days. She'd been curious what it was about, but duty came first. While she was busy running all over, night had fallen.
A full moon shone in the sky. Her old home. Not that she felt any nostalgia for it. But the home she once fled sure looked beautiful from afar. Maybe that's what time did to things.
On Earth, nights like this were for moon-viewing parties and dango. It wasn't quite the right season, but a few dango would make a good late-night snack. She just had to check the medicine stocks first. Oh, and there was still a customer waiting on a new prescription.
Her job was one of the least important in Eientei, but somehow, she was always busy. And so, the words slipped out before she could stop them.
"Boy, I could really go for some dango right now."
Who could blame her? She was exhausted. Besides, things were lively out in the garden. There'd surely be fun... but also a big mess to clean. Still, letting the night pass by quietly without joining in felt like a waste.
