Hermit Lifeguard

Story
There wasn't a cloud in the sky as waves lapped softly against the shore. A hermit sat up high, keeping an eye on the beach and all those enjoying their time there. The world of eternal summer is a lively place, and absolutely everyone loves the beach and fun vacations. If there was a hermit who made it her mission to keep beachgoers safe and (somewhat strictly) teach them how to swim, what would a typical day look like for her? This is the tale of one such typical day for Kasen Ibaraki.

As usual, Kasen was watching over the beach from up in her lifeguard chair, and as usual, everything below her was calm and peaceful. The magician was busy surfing while the Hakurei shrine maiden charged, beachball in hand, toward the karakasa-obake and rokurokubi, who were focused on their baseball match. The poverty god wept as, once again, not a single fish was taking her bait, and the Hell goddess ran her watermelon-splitting contest. Screams of excitement and delight echoed out to sea, just as they did every day. There wasn't a single issue on the whole beach, so Kasen decided to get herself some orange juice (just like she did every day). Manzairaku and her other pets were there to help of course, but they were taking it just as easy as Kasen was.

The beach was as lively as ever. Surrounded by her pets, Kasen sipped away on her refreshing orange juice... but she wouldn't allow herself to grow complacent. Determined to fulfill her duty as a lifeguard, she gave warnings to the menreiki speeding over the waves on her jet ski and helped a lost satori youkai get back to her older sister. Just as she thought she could take a breather, she spotted the Hakurei shrine maiden and a magician making their way toward her. When she asked the two of them what was wrong, they replied with a smirk, "Our ball floated out to sea. Can you go get it for us?" In lieu of a stress ball, Kasen gripped her juice glass tight. All things considered, it's a miracle it didn't shatter then and there...

"Go get it yourself," said Kasen, to which Marisa replied, "But I thought it was your job to take care of everyone at the beach," with a teasing grin. Unfortunately, Marisa was right―going to get their ball was part of Kasen's duty as a lifeguard. And so that's just what she did. However, before giving it back to them, she let Manzairaku play with it for a while. Reimu's wails of protest continued on as the sun began to set and the sky turned as orange as Kasen's juice.

As the sun sank ever deeper, the beachgoers steadily started to leave. The buzz on the beach began to subside until all that was left was the sound of the waves rolling in and out of shore. Kasen was perfectly happy for her mostly peaceful day to end, but suddenly, Reimu and Marisa called out to her... "Party at the beach house!" "You're coming, right, Kasen?" Kasen rolled her eyes, knowing she had to go along and make sure there wasn't any trouble. She wasn't annoyed, though. In fact, it looked like she was smiling. "What should we have for dessert today?" she said cheerfully as she led her pets to the beach house. Kasen's day at the beach was over... but her night had just begun.
