From time to time, Koakuma puts on kamishibai shows somewhere on the shore of the Misty Lake. Thanks to her ability to instantly find the book she wants, it's easy for her to pick out stories that will delight the fairies.
Daiyousei loves watching Koakuma's kamishibai shows. Though she tends to be quiet and less mischievous than other fairies, she is just as curious. Her ability to swim through mist is unlike any other, and it allows her to get to the shows in a flash.
A kamishibai show is like a puppet show performed using paper cutouts. Unlike traditional books, its unique storytelling style captivates the fairies' imaginations and never lets go. The Scarlet Devil Mansion's library holds its share of paper cutouts and kamishibai boards.
Koakuma is known to make mizuame, a type of Japanese sweet, and sell it at her kamishibai shows. When the sticky substance is spun round and round with two sticks, it becomes magically sweeter. It supposedly comes in all sorts of delicious flavors, but you would have to ask a fairy to be sure.
"And now, the story of Princess Kaguya! Many centuries ago, a princess with the most beautiful black hair was born in a bamboo grove. Princess Kaguya was perfect in every way, not to mention extremely powerful. She cut down all those who opposed her with graceful ease. Not even a phoenix could stand against her. There truly wasn't a single foe the lovely princess couldn't defeat. But one day, she was ordered to eliminate envoys who had descended from the Moon―her former allies. Would she be able to defeat them in battle?"
(Huh... I don't remember the story going like this.)
"A new kind of entertainment has arrived on the shore of Misty Lake: Miss Koakuma's kamishibai shows! Sometimes, they're thrilling tales of adventure, and other times, they're dramatic stories full of sorrow and strife. Each time, the tale is different, so you can't afford to miss one. She holds them whenever she feels like it, and sometimes, I get so excited I end up crossing the Misty Lake without Cirno!
Today's story is about Princess Kaguya. I know it super well! I read it a bunch of times with Cirno and the others at school! Although I gotta say, this version is pretty different from the one we read..."
"I've started something new. I stumbled across these strange kamishibai sets in the library, and I've been reading the stories to the fairies. To be honest, I was just trying to kill some time, but the fairies really seemed to have fun. Now, I genuinely look forward to each show.
I read somewhere that people in the Human Village sell sweets at kamishibai shows, so I tried combining some of Lady Patchouli's leftover magical ingredients. Watching the fairies' pure, honest reactions is a delight, and seeing them discover how fun books and stories can be makes me happier than anything.
Something seems a little different today, though. Hmm, maybe they've figured out I made this one up myself."
