Mystical Bamboo Forest

Mentioned Characters: Tewi, Kagerou
Story
Tewi Inaba is a youkai rabbit seen in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost. Despite her small size, she is among the most ancient and long-lived rabbits in Gensokyo. The forest confounds even fairies, but those who meet Tewi are said to find their way out safely. On one moonlit night, the shadow of a wolf crossed her path...

Kagerou Imaizumi is a werewolf who calls the Bamboo Forest her home. She's a member of the Grassroots Youkai Network, a group of ordinarily docile youkai. She's calm by nature, but the full moon turns her into something more beastlike and heavily covered in fur. Unwilling to let others witness this side of her, she keeps herself shrouded beneath concealing clothes. On one moonlit night, a rabbit's shadow crossed her path...

Kagerou and Tewi crossed paths under the full moon. Even beneath the thick cover of bamboo, the silver moonlight poured through, revealing them to one another. Kagerou watched Tewi with caution. Tewi, in turn, studied the wolf before her and mused, "A wolf... This could be troublesome." And with that thought, she remembered that rabbits have always been the prey of wolves.

Being a youkai rabbit, I've lived for quite some time and gained a lot of experience. Even if a wolf were to attack me, I'm pretty sure I could fend it off. That was what Tewi thought before realizing that she'd rather not risk getting hurt. So the youkai rabbit raised her hands instead. "I surrender, Miss Wolf. I'm not tasty at all! Just pat my head. That might make you happier." Kagerou was taken aback. She was, after all, a timid youkai with little faith in her own fighting strength. She assumed the rabbit was far stronger, and so had no clue why she was surrendering. Anxious thoughts ran wild in her head. What if she declined Tewi's offer? Would something bad happen to her? And so, she gently slipped her arms around Tewi from behind and quietly stroked her head. Tewi was surprised the moment she felt the wolf's warmth against her back. (Wait a second... Could it be that this wolf is actually afraid of me?)

As Tewi wondered why a wolf was trembling in the presence of a rabbit, Kagerou did as she was told and gently began patting Tewi's head. "Uh... h-how's this?" she asked nervously. (Sh-She's trembling!) "Y-Yeah, it feels nice," replied Tewi, in an attempt to put the wolf at ease. (Why am I trying to help a wolf? Nothing about this situation makes sense...) As the moments passed, Kagerou began to realize that the small rabbit meant her no harm. She felt a sense of relief and slowly realized how adorable the rabbit in her arms was. "Oh, wait. It's a full moon tonight. My fur isn't too prickly, is it?" Kagerou asked with a trace of worry in her voice. Sensing her insecurity, Tewi reassured the wolf. "No. It's actually super fluffy." The soothing pats on Tewi's head slowly worked their magic. She started feeling completely relaxed, and before she knew it, she was leaning into Kagerou's chest, drifting into peaceful slumber.
