The Hourai princess, Kaguya Houraisan, was enjoying New Year's in Gensokyo. Dressed in a bright and beautiful kimono, suitable for such a festive occasion, she was playing sugoroku (a board game similar to snakes and ladders). The youkai rabbits nearby seemed to be enjoying it, too, as they were hopping even higher than usual.
The Hourai pharmacist, Eirin Yagokoro, was also enjoying New Year's in Gensokyo. The kimono she ordered at Kourindou fit her perfectly. According to Rinnosuke, he paid special attention to the hair ornament inspired by the Moon. He had to remake it multiple times until it was perfect.
"Hey, Eirin. Aren't there any other games we could play?"
The long sleeves of Kaguya's kimono fluttered as she placed her hagoita racket on the tatami floor, eliciting a sigh from Eirin, which she made sure to hide from the eternal princess. Kaguya was happily swinging her racket around a second ago, but it seems she was already bored. However, Eirin had grown accustomed to this long ago, so she answered with a smile.
"Of course. Why don't we play that next?"
Eirin was pointing at a board game, one Kaguya had never seen before.
Several hours later...
Looking down at the board game, Kaguya tilted her head in confusion.
"Hmm, I can't seem to make any progress... The volcano keeps exploding."
"Oh, but you created a new creature. Congratulations, it's a happy ammonite."
Kaguya isn't the only immortal; Eirin shares that fate. With her profound knowledge of history, Eirin prepared a game of sugoroku that told an epic story in pictures, spanning a much longer time than any mortal could experience.
"I suppose you're right! OK, let's race to see who can create humans first."
Eirin chuckled, seeing Kaguya's eyes shine like the Moon.
"Haha, you're on."
"Yay! I finally created Australopithecus!"
Kaguya picked up the piece, designed in her image, and placed it on the last square of the board, declaring the end of the eternally long game.
"Aww, I lost."
Despite her words, Eirin didn't seem at all disappointed.
"Teehee, when was the last time I beat you in a game, Eirin?"
"Hmmm, I can't remember."
"Me neither. But I feel like it's been quite a long time."
Seeing Kaguya celebrate so innocently, Eirin couldn't help but make a suggestion.
"For the next game, why don't we ask Udonge and Tewi to play with us?"
"Great idea!"
The Sun set as if in sync with Kaguya's enthusiastic nod, and Eirin quietly prepared herself for another long night.
