This document has been severely affected by purification. When reading it, take care not to lose your own name...
Junko is a nameless sagacious spirit whose resentment was purified. Her pure hatred now soars through the cosmos.
Purification is represented by Higan, the far side of the border between life and death. Which side of it are you on?
The Enemy of the Lunarians
"Lifeform" refers to any and all beings that experience birth, life, and death. Conversely, beings who do not experience birth, life, or death are not lifeforms. But does that mean only lifeforms experience life?
Junko has attacked the Moon. Multiple times. But on this occasion, she attacked the Lunar capital using the principle of life―i.e., a principle of impurity, which the Lunarians detest above all else. Impurity is a cursed fate, one from which there is no escape. It's a fundamental principle of life on Earth and can be seen in the concepts of survival of the fittest and natural selection, as well as in the structure of ecosystems and predator-prey relationships. Put simply, impurity results from the necessity to kill others and continuously reproduce in order to preserve life.
The Lunarians are those whose ire for such a cursed fate led them to flee to the Moon. However, since their origins still lie on the Earth, they suffer the same impurities as their Earth counterparts, and a certain amount of impurity can be found in and around the Lunar Capital. And given that Hecatia possesses a Moon Hell goddess body, it's clear the Moon also has its own Hell, which demonstrates that the Lunarians can never escape from the impurity of death.
The Lunarians view the people of Hourai as impure despite their transcendence of life and death. This is likely because one only consumes the Hourai Elixir out of a desire to conquer death and cling to life. Even though the Lunarians are aware of their finite lifespans and try desperately to avoid the concepts of both life and death, they simply won't stand for anyone who seeks to overcome those concepts entirely. The Lunarian Capital is a surveillance state where the purity of your inner thoughts and feelings is constantly scrutinized.
When it comes to their way of viewing birth, life, and death, Junko and the Lunarians couldn't be more at odds.
Sagacious Spirits
Junko is a divine spirit, but she refers to herself as a sagacious spirit. A divine spirit is the soul of someone who, before their death, had accumulated faith, or a ghost who is worshipped as a god. It might also be possible for a divine spirit to form from the amassing of tiny divine spirits, which are spawned from people's wishes and prayers. In any case, it's clear that the existence of divine spirits has been influenced by animism and ancestral spirit worship.
The reason Junko refers to herself as a sagacious spirit is probably because she is (or was) a hermit, or at least something similar to a hermit, with a strong connection to senjutsu. Based on her name and what is known about her, it seems she originates from China, around the time the age of the gods was coming to an end, and recorded history was beginning. It was an era dominated by the power of Taoism and senjutsu.
Taoism also began as a form of nature worship, but it evolved into a unique and complex religion. Therefore, it makes sense to call Junko a sagacious spirit to differentiate her from divine spirits, who aren't under the direct influence of Taoism. In Taoism, there is no difference between gods and hermits. The Taoist word for an immortal, shenxian, is even written with the characters for god and hermit.
Written Characters
There was once a clan who created systems of writing and spread them across the land. They are to thank for the written characters' use and understanding by so many around the world. Systems of writing are not natural occurrences but inventions with clear cultural roots. They survive because each generation goes to great lengths to teach them to the next.
According to myth, the epochal idea for a system of writing came from humans studying animal footprints. Historical research also shows that the oldest forms of written communication are carvings made into tortoise shells and oxen bones. Written characters were originally used to add divine mysticism to magical rituals, but as their use spread, practicality and ease of use became more relevant, and they subsequently devolved into simple symbols―i.e., the symbols we know today. But it wasn't just written characters that underwent this process. Religion, politics, economics, art, scholarship, daily life, language... All aspects of civilization were given over to regular humans with no great gifts or accomplishments to their name. This process can be thought of as a meteor crashing into the Earth―for once it does, it can never again soar among the cosmos, and while its light may linger for a short while, it's destined to fade. And so the people look once more to the stars in search of something new. This unquenchable thirst for more is what ushered in the age of our materialistic civilization, and the invention of writing systems served as the first tantalizing drop.
Life
Junko is a being of resentment, hatred, and rage. The more she's purified, the more her emotions are sublimated to pure insanity. But does any purpose remain in the midst of her insanity? The hotter a fire burns, the less charcoal it leaves behind. By now, she's surely forgotten the source of her resentment. But has she forgotten Chang'e, who she once despised with such vigor...?
The Lunarians don't allow for any attachment to the impurities of life and death. They run from, ignore, and turn a blind eye toward them. Junko, on the other hand, is forever focused on them. She faces them time and time again, not once averting her gaze. The Lunarians distance themselves from life and death and try to lock them away. If a being has even a trace of impurity, Junko can instantly bring them face to face with their mortality.
She who has been driven to lunacy by life, and those who despise it above all else... Junko and the Lunarians' war will surely never end.
