Report #70

Story
This photo shows the central structure of the Former Capital, which is home to the Underworld's warden. She is sometimes called the ruler of the Underworld, even surpassing the oni in authority. Unlike the rest of the Former Capital, which resembles old Japanese townscapes, this building appears strangely Western, both inside and out.

Excerpt from M's report: "The architecture here is clearly different from the surrounding streets, but what really stands out is the height. It's clearly been built that way intentionally. Whether or not someone is actually watching you from above is irrelevant. What matters is that you FEEL like someone is. No doubt the ruler of this land lives here."

Excerpt from R's report: "Is this Gothic architecture? Whoever built it has refined taste. Scary, but refined. It totally clashes with the scenery. I bet the locals hate it. All the sharp angles give it a really aggressive feel. It's unnerving to say the least. But maybe that's the point..."

Excerpt from M's report: "If the Underworld is a prison and this is its watchtower, then the ideal warden would be someone who could see in all directions. Panopticons are made to maximize prisoner surveillance for as little cost as possible. If someone could see through even the walls of the mind, they'd be perfect for the job."

Excerpt from R's report: "Are they saying that a beautiful rose has thorns, so a beautiful rose window belongs on the thorny canvas of Gothic architecture? Weird. This place reminds me of the scenery around the Kumano Sanzan shrines. Who'd have thought Gothic architecture would remind me of Japanese mountains? Wait, is that supposed to be Yatagarasu on the central window?"
