What kinda moron tries to shove a cartridge in backwards?! You're gonna break it!
???
Maybe we shouldn't be doing this, Miss Rika. I think we need to get permission first...!
???
Let's put it back before someone starts asking questions.
???
Seriously? You followed me all this way, and you're only saying this now?
???
I was only following you to stop you! You make it sound like I'm complicit!
???
You are. I've already recorded your trademark line! You fool!
???
If Reimu or that old turtle from Hakurei Shrine sees us...!
???
Are you talking about me?
???
You sound like you've seen a ghost or a kaiju. Don't worry. It's just me.
??? & ???
*trying to sneak away*
???
Come now. You can't leave until you fix this.
???
B-But! It's her fault! She tried to put the cartridge in backwards!
You
(Cartridge? What is she talking about...?)
???
Forget about that... Hey, do you think you can stop this?
You
Huh?! Me?! How should I know?! I don't even know what's happening!
???
Hey, don't yell at us! Who do you think you are?!
???
Now, now. If she doesn't know, she doesn't know. Shell I handle this for you?
???
You didn't just say that...
???
Shell? Because you're a turtle?
???
However! I am not all-powerful. The younguns nowadays are all about altering reality and time loops, but this isn't that.
???
This is much simpler. It bugged out, so we hit reset. That's what everyone did back in my day.
???
You can also hit reset when it isn't bugged, but you know what happens then, don't you? You lose all the progress you made.
???
This also means that you can hit reset to start over, but unfortunately, it will break if you hit reset too many times.
???
Either way, repeating things is not recommended. The total run-time might cause something else to break...
???
Oh, sorry. I'm rambling again, aren't I?
???
Yep! Hurry up and show us this reset thing!
???
Is it just me, or does this sound a lot like the power of the Hakurei?
???
Very well... Hmmmmmmmm! Ho ho ho!
???
The enemies are still here...
???
I said I'd hit reset...
???
But that doesn't mean it'll reset immediately.
???
This turtle's playing us for fools...!
???
Resetting takes time.
???
So, someone will have to delay these enemies until it completes. Can I count on you, Miss PLAYER?
You
You're not really giving me much choice...!
???
Ho ho, you sound just like my master when her back's up against the wall!
???
Phew, they're gone. Well done, Miss PLAYER.
You
I don't know how I survived that...!
???
All's well that ends well!
???
You two will be getting a talking to later. It was Miss Yumemi and Miss Chiyuri's turn to handle the cartridges.
???
We should talk later, too, Miss PLAYER.
???
You deserve a more in-depth explanation. Bye for now.
To Read or Not to Read? Pt. 2
???
What's up, Renko? I thought we were going this way.
Renko
Uhh, yeah! Let's go, Koishi.
Talking to Merry, I realized something. If Merry and I are suffering from some kind of dreaming disease...
Then it only makes sense that Merry's relative, Professor Violet, is somewhere here in this Last Ward.
She's the leading expert on dreaming disease, so it's hard to imagine she wouldn't be here researching the outbreak.
Sure, if there was another dreaming disease outbreak in another part of the world, she could be there instead...
But there's been nothing like that in the news. I'm almost certain this could only ever happen in a place like this.
Professor Violet is an innovator. Surely, she'd be the first to sniff out the outbreak and start investigating.
Next come the early adopters, like Miss Aya. The wider world only starts hearing about it after they publish articles.
Miss Aya hasn't caught on to the outbreak yet, but it's only a matter of time until she kicks up a journalistic storm.
She was the same back at school. She was a member of the newspaper club... I think I might've mentioned that before.
Anyway, the Last Ward is a dreaming disease petri dish. I have to find the professor before that becomes common knowledge.
An innovator would've left by then, without sharing any of their findings.
I'm a bit of an innovator myself, so I would know.
Theoretically, she could make her assistants do all the field work and stay at her desk, compiling the info they gather...
But, no. She'd never do that. Like, why would she let them have all the fun?!
The Last Tokyo Ward is an archive of all the past Tokyos. It has a complex structure of countless layers.
Building a city isn't as simple as stacking different blocks. If it lacks even a single type of infrastructure, it cannot function.
Beneath each city lies a colossal geofront that literally holds up the sky for the city below, and the ground for the city above.
This means that there are plenty of secret areas where Professor Violet could be hiding.
That said, to have any hope of finding her, there are two problems that I must overcome.
There's a chance that everything we think we know about the professor is a hallucination caused by the dreaming disease.
But that's not something I can solve through logical reasoning. That's why I'm out here searching on foot.
I'm much more worried about the other problem.
I live in an age where the power of science and technology is freely accessible, and I'm not a kid anymore, so...
I never thought I'd get lost.
And it was going so well when I started exploring from the riverbank...
Renko
This place seems to stretch on forever... Was it built to collect stormwater or something?
Koishi
It's really cool, huh?! So smelly and dank!
Koishi is a strange girl. Of course, I only really know her from when we were little. So, she might've changed since then.
The Koishi Komeiji I remember was always smiling.
She has an older sister called Satori, and they are usually accompanied by two maids.
You might assume that the sisters are the center of attention and that their maids just fade into the background...
But that's not the case. Hmm, how to say this...? Their maids have an intense presence...
It's like they could fight a whole room of miscreants solo. Anyway, they are quite an eccentric family.
Of course, that includes the sisters themselves.
Satori can read people's minds, and Koishi's mind cannot be read by anyone.
That's what we all used to say at school. But... I've also seen things that made me believe it.
You might think that anyone can hide their own thoughts or read what other people are thinking, at least to some extent.
And you'd be right. But the Komeiji sisters go way beyond that.
Satori can read your innermost thoughts, and Koishi hides her thoughts so well that she becomes completely unpredictable.
The more you think about their abilities, the more creepy and unsettling they seem.
But you have to remember that we were kids. Kids can freely interpret things in fun and delightful ways that adults can't.
Satori and Koishi were really popular, especially during exam season for Satori and on sports days for Koishi.
Satori's popularity is fairly intuitive. If you could read the mind of whoever set the exam, you could answer every question.
Of course, she was also asked to read minds on other occasions, too. Mostly to find out people's crushes.
It's almost inevitable that sensitive young girls would wish to know what their friends, family, or crush is thinking.
However, when Satori tried to fulfill these wishes, she would not be thanked for it. The reason for this is simple.
When dealing with interpersonal relationships, reading the other person's mind can never end well.
Mind-reading is basically a one-sided conversation.
You'll learn what they're thinking, but they will not understand your thoughts.
Once a girl who asked Satori for help realizes this, they will blame her for all the guilt and discomfort they feel.
Satori only did what they asked, but if they didn't blame her, they'd have to blame themselves.
Because of this, while Satori was one of the most popular girls in school, she was also an outcast, hated by many.
Koishi is the direct opposite of her sister. It's like she got all the sporty genes.
Her remarkable poker face gave her an advantage in all kinds of contests, but it was most noticeable when playing sports.
Her feints would succeed 100% of the time. Do you understand how crazy that is?
It makes her unbeatable. In a one-on-one contest, she would always win.
Since her feints always succeed, her next move would always end up being something her opponent didn't expect.
And forget about trying to plan multiple moves ahead. There's no time for that in sports.
Feinting is all about provoking a reaction, and reactions are much faster than thoughts. By the time you think, it's too late.
Also, if she knows what reaction her feint will provoke, she can anticipate how she'll react to their reaction.
But she must do this with her unconscious mind, so it's as fast as her reactions. Otherwise, her opponent could anticipate her.
She truly shines in combat sports like karate and kendo, but even in team sports, she can carry the team to victory.
If you're good at sports, you're bound to be popular. When someone needed an extra player, they'd ask Koishi first.
However, like her sister, Koishi also got a lot of hate because she didn't just feint while playing sports.
When she says something, you can't tell why she said it, and conveying what you're feeling to her feels impossible.
It's also hard to notice when she does something. It's like she's invisible until she suddenly appears out of nowhere.
If you went to school with someone like that, you wouldn't just hate her, you'd want to avoid her as much as possible.
If you hung out with her, you'd constantly question what she was thinking, what she'd do next, and where she had gone.
It would be exhausting. No one would want that.
At least, that's what everyone told me.
Koishi
It's been ages since we last met, huh, Renko?!
Koishi
I'm so happy that we get to chat again like old times. You always have the best stories.
Koishi
We can chat, right? Let's chat.
Renko
Huh? Y-Yeah! We can chat if you like...
Renko
(Honestly, I think I might've gotten Koishi lost, too.)
Renko
(If so, then it's my responsibility to get her home. Especially since I'm not sure she realizes what kinda trouble we're in.)
Renko
(I have to protect her!)
Renko
Umm, what should we talk about?
Koishi
You were talking about something before, but then you stopped. What was it again?
Koishi
Do you remember, Renko? You were searching for someone...
Renko
You mean Professor Violet? The leading expert on dreaming disease? Maybe we should save that until we get back...
Koishi
Yeah, Miss Violet. I know her!
Koishi
I'll tell you about her as we walk. Ummm...
Renko
H-Hold on! I gotta take some notes!
Koishi
Hmm... I should start from the start, right?
Koishi
Back when Earth was a ball of molten fire―
Renko
Oh... You meant the very start...
To Read or Not to Read? Pt. 3
Merry
Can you tell me where Renko went?
Satori
Please, take a seat.
Merry
Umm, I haven't introduced myself yet.
Satori
There's no need. I already know about you.
Satori
Now, let's talk, shall we?
Satori
You're in a hurry, are you not?
Calm down. Calm down, Maribel Hearn.
I shouldn't jump to conclusions. Miss Aya must've told her my name.
She's right that I'm in a hurry, but that is an incredibly vague observation. It's the Barnum effect―a cheap trick.
And I will not fall for it! I study relative psychology, for goodness' sake!
Merry
You're right. I am in a hurry, but that's only because...
Satori
Renko has gone, and you don't know where she went.
Satori
I'm old friends with Renko. I might be able to help.
Renko and I went over our reports together. The name Satori Komeiji came up in hers.
I believe that she is another one of Renko's "fake" childhood friends. She never mentioned any of them until recently.
But my perceptions and memories might have been altered...
...by the dreaming disease.
It's happened before, with the whole "I'm related to Professor Violet" thing.
If my memories hadn't been altered, I'm sure I would've shared that with Renko before now...
Then again, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm starting to believe that I might have.
Maybe if I looked back over the diary entries, notes, and essays that Renko and I have written...
I might find proof that my relationship with Professor Violet is real.
I should write this down, too. Though I'll have to clean up the wording and stuff to make it sound like a proper report.
Yeah, I'm sure I'll get round to that eventually.
Satori
Miss Merry. Let me guess your thoughts and the actions you took.
Satori
First, you and Renko shared your reports with each other. That is when Renko first learned about your relative.
Satori
She became aware that you and Professor Violet, the leading expert on dreaming disease, are related.
Satori
Renko started searching for the professor without telling you. She came here alone... at least, that is what you believe.
Satori
You also believe that she kept it a secret out of kindness. She didn't want you to get hurt.
Satori
Professor Violet may be your relative, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you should search for her together.
Satori
If you set out without being sure whether your memories have been altered or not, it could mess up your head even more.
Satori
But Renko doesn't have any connection with Professor Violet, so there's less risk of that happening to her.
Satori
That was Renko's reasoning, or so you presume.
Satori
Now, let me guess what led you to me.
Kanako
You're looking for Renko? Hmmm, I haven't seen her.
Kanako
I'll let you know if I hear anything. Where can I find you, Merry?
Kanako
Oh, did Renko tell you about her? I see...
Kanako
That's a good idea. She might be able to help you. But to see her, you'll have to go to the floor below us.
Kanako
You're pretty lucky, Merry.
Kanako
You caught me just as I was leaving. Also...
Kanako
The people on the floor below are really nice.
Suwako
Hey, Merry. Fancy seeing you here!
Suwako
What? You're looking for Renko? She still wanders off on her own, huh?
Suwako
Once she gets an idea in her head, she acts upon it, and no one can stop her. I've been in your shoes before, Merry.
Suwako
Unfortunately, I'm heading out now, so I can't help you look. But if I hear anything, I'll let you know!
Suwako
Also, I agree that talking to the folks on the floor below us is probably your best bet.
Suwako
They're all great people, so I'm sure they'll help you out.
Sanae
Wow, is that you, Miss Merry? Morning!
Sanae
Oh, sorry. I was just so happy to see you again.
Sanae
What? You're looking for Renko? I haven't seen her...
Sanae
I can't even begin to guess where she might be... It's not like she goes to school every day like me.
Sanae
But I know someone who might be able to help you. She can read minds, you know?
Sanae
If she reads your mind, she could search through it to find things that you might have forgotten.
Sanae
Isn't that amazing? I'd love it if I could do that.
Sanae
That said, while her reading your mind might give you some clues, you'll probably have to put them together yourself.
Sanae
Oops. I gotta get to school. Don't wanna be late!
Aya
Ayayaya, Miss Merry. I've been waiting for you.
Aya
I've been watching over you ever since you talked to Miss Kanako.
Aya
Why did I follow you around instead of saying hello? Well, I am a journalist.
Aya
Just like how nature photographers don't interfere with wildlife, journalists prefer not to interfere with current events.
Aya
So, you must be wondering why I decided to say hello now, huh? There are multiple reasons.
Aya
First, I live in one of these apartments. I didn't tell you that before, did I? I wouldn't have.
Aya
But the main reason is that the person you're going to meet is, umm, how do I explain this?
Aya
She's... incredibly popular.
Aya
I wouldn't want you to get off on the wrong foot, so I thought I'd introduce you to her.
Aya
This may sound strange, but I don't want anything bad happening, especially not now when Miss Renko's not here...
Aya
There's no need? Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned Miss Renko!
Aya
Please don't be mad, Miss Merry! I think you're misunderstanding something!
Aya
Umm, it's not like I'm trying to keep you out of the loop! Rather, it's the opposite...!
Aya
W-Wait! You should at least knock first!
???
Keep it down, would you? How many times do I have to say it?
???
You keep it down. I can't concentrate with all your stomping about.
???
Are you that worried about your dancing that you need last-minute practice? I wonder what your fans would think?
???
I heard you stumbling over your lines. If your fans heard about that, it'd completely shatter the image you've cultivated.
???
Guess you'd know a lot about reciting lines, huh?
???
Princess Byakuren... graced with a voice so beautiful that she must've eaten the flesh of a mermaid.
Byakuren
And you'd know a lot about dancing.
Byakuren
Angelic Miko, so light on her feet that she must have a hidden pair of wings.
Miko
You're making fun of me, aren't you?
Byakuren
You're making fun of me.
Aya
Whoa, calm down, Miss Miko, Miss Byakuren! Miss Merry's here!
Byakuren
Oh, sorry... That's embarrassing.
Miko
Merry? Ah, yes... You came to our school not that long ago. Wanna grab that coffee milk I offered you before?
Byakuren
Miss Miko. Stop practicing your lines on every girl you meet. You'll give them the wrong idea.
Miko
You say that as if you've never tried something similar.
Aya
Enough! Save that kinda thing for the stage!
Aya
You were only given leave from school so you could practice for the upcoming play.
Aya
Just like how I was given leave to work on my newspaper. At the moment, I'm helping Miss Merry with her investigation.
Aya
I was just about to set up a meeting with the person living here.
Aya
You two should help me out, since you have so much free time.
Miko
No, I'd better not. I doubt such a great person would want to see lowly, old me.
Miko
Besides, I need to practice for the play.
Byakuren
Same here. She's on a completely other level from us.
Byakuren
It was nice meeting you, Miss Merry.
Aya
All right, I'll go tell her that you're here and that you want to talk to her. Please wait just a moment.
???
Sorry for the wait, Miss Merry. We met the other day, didn't we?
???
My name is Rin Kaenbyou, but please call me Orin. I serve Lady Satori as her maid.
???
I'm Utsuho Reiuji, but call me Okuu, OK? I'm a maid, too.
Rin
Okuu, Lady Satori can hear us, so try to be more polite.
Utsuho
Seriously? That's such pain...
Rin
*sigh* Please come in, Miss Merry.
Satori
...That's exactly what happened, isn't it?
Merry
No one complimented you that much!
Satori
Didn't they? Strange.
But other than that, she was pretty spot-on. How did she do that?
Don't tell me she can truly read minds...
If she can, that means she possesses an incredibly powerful ability. Maybe there's a barrier that hasn't been lost yet.
I need to make sure... But Renko takes priority...
Merry
I doubt talking to you will help me find Renko, since I have no idea where she might be.
Merry
Sorry to have bothered you. I'll try to find her myself.
Satori
No, you were right to come to me. You shouldn't leave. Not yet.
Satori
Miss Merry, you are an interesting individual.
Satori
Normally, you are poised, polite, and considered. People cannot help but admire your sharp wit and kind heart.
Satori
But that is a mask, an elaborate show you put on for others to hide your true self.
Satori
Your true self stops thinking rationally when it comes to Renko. You become emotional and impulsive.
She sees right through me... If I'm being honest with myself, what I'm probably feeling right now... is jealousy.
I'm jealous that people who knew Renko when she was little suddenly showed up. I'm jealous that they keep showing up.
It's possible that these aren't fabricated memories, but I can't stop myself from wishing that they were.
Satori
Please, sit. Let's have some tea.
Rin
I'll go put the kettle on.
Aya
It seems you two have a lot to talk about, so, umm, I'd better get going. My newspaper's not gonna write itself.
Utsuho
The door's behind you. *points*
To Read or Not to Read? Pt. 4
???
I know what you're thinking. You think you'd be better off calling them and talking over the phone.
Journal?
PLAYER, someone surely has the answers to your questions.
Journal?
And someone else might notice something you've overlooked. So, it's natural that you'd think to give them a call.
Journal?
But I'm here to explain why you shouldn't.
Journal?
Stories are nothing but a series of explanations.
Journal?
But it would be foolish to presume that all stories must be expository. That completely misses the point of them.
Journal?
Look at the world around you. It's full of explanations. But it's also full of people who don't read explanations.
Journal?
Stories are shaped by the push and pull of those who don't read explanations and those who want people to read them.
Journal?
But just like how there are no sweet medicines, merely different levels of bitterness...
Journal?
Some explanations are more palatable than others. Stories string these different tastes together into a full-course meal.
Journal?
But enough about that. This is the kinda thing that should go in a bonus .txt file, separate from the game itself.
Journal?
What were we talking about again...? Ah, yes. Phones.
Journal?
First off, there's no reception within the Last Tokyo Ward. They lack the necessary infrastructure.
Journal?
Or is it a dead zone because of how it was built? Either way, the result is the same.
Journal?
Not to mention that, in this day and age, people don't really use mobile phones.
Journal?
Think about it. Nowadays, people value individualism above almost everything else.
Journal?
For humans to keep living in the future, all the problems that plagued international relations needed a solution.
Journal?
This resulted in enforced population limits, with each person being allocated a portion of the planet's resources.
Journal?
Actually, I think Koishi was about to talk about this in the report you're reading.
Journal?
Yes, I'll leave the more detailed explanation to her. Just know that humans don't value wealth the same way they did before.
Journal?
Umm, by "before," I mean an age before this one. A long, long time ago.
Journal?
Anyway, a piece of the planet is allocated to each person. This includes energy, mineral, and human resources.
Journal?
People do not own land like they did in the past, and currency is more fluid. Yes, it's like a new-age currency.
Journal?
Because of the limited population, each individual is an institution, a mechanism, and a government unto themselves.
Journal?
It may look like old cities have been abandoned and are in the process of being reclaimed by nature...
Journal?
But that is the will of those who own them. They have deemed it to be more profitable or beneficial than the alternative.
Journal?
The opposite is also true. The owners of universities and railways keep them going because that is more profitable.
Journal?
The collection of Tokyo cityscapes seems to only be maintained for nostalgic reasons, but perhaps it is profitable, too.
Journal?
This is an age of ultra-individualism, where people are incredibly self-sufficient and most things are automated.
Journal?
The times when you might need to contact someone urgently have become few and far between.
Journal?
It's like each person possesses their own world, and they never have to step out of it if they don't want to.
Journal?
But this doesn't mean that need has disappeared, only that it is no longer constant, so there is no service that fulfills it.
Journal?
Although few, there might still be some people in some situations who need to contact someone urgently.
Journal?
Like those two girls of the Secret Sealing Club...
Journal?
Also, if everyone carried mobile phones, creating drama would be much more difficult.
Journal?
I'm everyone you want to know more about.
Journal?
The owner of the Last Tokyo Ward...
Journal?
Professor Violet...
Journal?
Your benefactor.
Journal?
You don't seem surprised.
Journal?
Haha, you've always been good at that.
Journal?
It is as you suspect. The boundary of your mind and consciousness is becoming unstable.
Journal?
It is a strain of dreaming disease, but not the one you know.
Journal?
It's Violet's boundary strain of dreaming disease.
Journal?
Groundless, unfamiliar, and unwanted memories keep popping up in your mind, like zombies rising from a graveyard.
Journal?
But similar to the original dreaming disease, you are still you, only you might not be the only you.
This didn't start with those dreams, did it?
Journal?
You've been suffering from this disease since the very beginning.
Journal?
You are determined, but you still lack knowledge and wisdom. It's like you're relying solely on luck to dodge bullets.
Journal?
You don't know everything. You must accept that.
Neither do you... since you're conjured from my mind.
Journal?
Oh, I was just about to talk about that.
Journal?
You're correct. So there isn't much point in asking me questions that you don't already know the answer to.
Journal?
For example, I can't tell you what happened to the Lost Barriers or where I am right now.
Journal?
That said, you could still ask me, and I might just answer. But that would mean you did, in fact, know the answer after all.
Journal?
You reread your journal sequentially, but I'm not like that. I am a being of facts who sees everything in parallel.
When I read these reports, it feels like I'm there...
Journal?
Yes. Because, just like how I am a figment of your mind, those Secret Sealing Club girls are your impressions of them.
Journal?
Time and space have no bearing on these experiences. That's why it's nighttime, even though it's day.
Journal?
And why, even though those girls are still in the Last Word, you already have their reports.
Journal?
What's happening now is being written at the same time as their reports. And what you're reading is happening now, too.
Journal?
But so what? What's wrong with being insane?
Journal?
If it is insane, then that is how it should be. It would be much more strange if this were normal.
Journal?
You'll only find what you seek by venturing beyond this insanity. It's too late to turn back now.
Journal?
The easiest thing you could do is linger here in insanity's comforting embrace. Is that what you want?
Journal?
I wasn't expecting an answer. You never really had a choice.
Journal?
However, if you do linger, you shouldn't expect everything else to linger here with you.
Journal?
Others will continue to act according to their own wants and needs.
Journal?
Don't forget that.
Even if you're only a manifestation of my memories...
I'm glad to hear from you again. I've missed you.
Journal?
Even now, I still love you from the bottom of my heart.
Journal?
It's almost time for the next act. I'll hop back in your pocket.
Journal?
Be careful, PLAYER.
Sakuya
Sakuya... Yes, Sakuya... That is the name, the nickname, you returned to me: Sakuya Izayoi.
Sakuya
Thank you. I finally found my way here.
Is this the place you were searching for?!
Sakuya
Yes. At least, I think it is.
Sakuya
All the information you've gathered is here. So maybe... this is where we'll find what we have lost.
Sakuya
But we can only stay here while you're alone, since you're the only one who knows us.
We? You mean there are others?
Sakuya
Yes... I'm sorry, but we need help, and you're the only one I can ask.
Sakuya
Don't worry, you two. Luckily, we made it in time.
Sakuya
My friends. I happened across them even though we follow different paths.
Sakuya
There are no paths when you ignore the limits of spacetime. That is how I managed to take them here with me.
Sakuya
I might not always call them my friends, but now is an exception. Please... help them.
B-But what can I do?! Are they hurt?!
Sakuya
Their wounds are conceptual. They've lost large fragments of their fates. But they should recover if they regain their names.
Sakuya
You should be able to name them like you named me.
???
Wait. That's too risky.
???
Have you gone mad? How can you place their lives in the hands of some random human?
???
I doubt she could even do what you suggested.
Sakuya
So, you followed me... I'm not as mad as you may think. I know we can trust PLAYER.
Sakuya
I'm living proof of that.
Sakuya
Besides, you must've followed me for a reason. Want me to guess what it is?
???
It's not a hard guess...
Sakuya
I knew it. You're hurt, too.
Sakuya
Please, PLAYER... There's not much time.
